Sunny when I fished from 3pm to 5pm. Air temp was around 60. Water levels where slightly higher than average but the water had a good color. After the heavy rains it's finally getting to be fishable. Water temp was 56 degrees when I started but ticked up to 57 degrees about 4pm. A smattering of caddis were coming back to lay eggs. I saw one rise to a dancing caddis that avoided getting eaten.
The fish showed some interest but this was by far the slowest day from what has become my annual stop at Brokenstraw. I caught 4 trout and a SM bass on 4 different flies. You really had to work for them. The 14" bass fought like a 20" trout making 2 really nice runs. Also lucked into a large palomino that I hadn't spotted previously. Missed a fish on a drift so I duplicated the cast and hooked that fish. Ended with a missed bag of brown, rainbow, palomino and SM bass.
If you fish Brokenstraw be prepared for a very slick stream bed. Lots of round rocks with green moss and very little gravel. Very treacherous. Right up there with Slippery Rock creek and may be worse.
Had hoped to fish Caldwell on the way home but I had to change a flat tire after finishing at Brokenstraw (which I think actually happened while turkey hunting in the morning).
