I shot my archery buck and doe this past week so I finally made it out fishing again today. Outside temp's were high 30's as was the water temperature. Very little insect activity. There was sun which helped keep the gloves off the hands but the wind made it quite chilly.
I fished the middle section of the Brodhead where no stocking occurs. Fished from around 1-330 pm. Initially I spotted some trout rising to presumably midges. I dead drifted a small (20) trico about 6-12" under the surface and missed 2 strikes. The wind made effective "dry fly" fishing difficult so I switched to streamers because nymphing is always my last resort. I started getting strikes almost immediately. Some took the streamer on the swing, others dead drifted, and others just bit with the streamer holding in the current.
Some of the browns I landed were in fast water and some were laying on the current seams. I saw reds but didn't wade or fish over the reds. I typically catch 8-14" browns in this section but today the big ones were hungry. Get out there and fish. The browns are still gorging for their winter coats!
