Got to the stream around 6PM. Air temps in the 70's, water was still very cool (didn't take a measurement), and there was a lot of sun until it set over the ridge.
Not much hatch activity early, saw the occasional sulphur, a green drake or two on the water, and 1 coffin fly flying by. Very sporadic rises. Had a buddy catch one early on a size #14 yellowish tie (not sure what the heck it was) in a big deep pool, and I took a native on a #14 sulphur in a small riffle. My buddy also missed one on a drake.
About 1 hour before dark the sulphurs started to pick up and so did the rising trout. Then it got really interesting in the last 30 minutes of light. Turned into strikes every cast (I not going to say it was a hook up and landed fish every cast!!!) The hatch was not overly heavy, but enough to get the fish really working. So I think the fact that our imitations were not in all out cloud of naturals really helped with the number of strikes. All in all me and my bud caught and released over 20 on size #14 sulphurs without moving out of the same stretch which had a good deep riffle into a nicely moving pool. It was a real hodge-podge of fish, a few natives, 2 nice sized wild browns, and the rest stocked browns and bows.
With the exception of one older fella spin fishing that was there when we first showed up, didn't see anyone else on the water. This truly was one of those unexpected little gems of a night.
