10-5-13. Big Spring Run (Ditch). The day was clear, the trout were feeding and to my surprise, I was the only one on the water except for one guy who stopped and talked to me about hunting and some fishing, I think his name was Greg? Anyhow , I started off with a 7x tippet and my cress bug with no luck the first 30 minutes, but saw they were deff feeding, taking bites from the cress and trying to pick out the minute insects. I then put on a simple olive shrimp size 18 that took one nice rainbow. My numbers were down and I tied on a pattern that I haven't used since spring that works great, the pattern is Don Hollbrooks original shrimp. I nipped my 7x and put on 6x with his size 18 original shrimp that i had tied and first cast I was on to a nice 12" rainbow, I knew I had got the right color/fly down, now it was all up to presentation. Working my way to the head of the spring I was able to land 4 brook trout two of them bigger than 10-11inches and 4 rainbows one 14" that actually slipped off right before I could land him and missed a few more. Deff one of my better days up at the ditch this year and I was sure glad to make the drive like always. I was able to get some quick pics of the brook trout for my book for the colors were amazing. Before I left I drove down to the first parking lot to see 4 anglers fishing but none upstream from the parking lot, so I walked up to see some kids swimming in the creek, so I called it a day, but a great day it was.
