Big Spring cumberland County 7/31/2008

Fished Big Spring tonight from 7-9pm. I managed six fish-five small brookies and one decent rainbow. Best flies were #16 Pale Yellow Honeybug, #14 Foam Yellow Jacket, #16 Bloodworm, #16 Olive Cressbug. I witnessed the strangest phenomenon while there...Clumps of weed would periodically float down the ditch and groups of three or four fish would attack it and then swim around like sharks chomping their mouths. This happened several times per hour. I picked up several clumps of weed, but I did not see very much so I'm baffled as to what is in the weeds other than cressbugs/sowbugs that is making the fish behave this way? If you have a clue, feel free to fill me in. Below is a pic of the rainbow I caught. The color on this fish made my evening.

Maybe the trout are having salad with their meal? They are vegetarian trout? Probably they were just going for the sowbugs.

That must have been neat to see the trout attacking the clumps of water weeds. That's one of the greatest parts about fishing, seeing interesting, or even bizarre stuff out on the streams.
