Big Spring, Cumberland County, 11/06/11

Hi all,

First off my name is Matt and I moved to Boiling Springs from Massachusetts this past winter. My wife works for Giant and was offered a promotion down here. When she told me where it was located I enthusiastically encouraged her to accept. MA is not exactly a trout fishing mecca.


Anyhow, I fished Big Spring Sunday from 10:30 until dark. Being new to PA, I spent most of the day looking around at sections of the creek I hadn't been to yet (the lower half of the FFO water).

I spent most of the day fishing a tandem of a San Juan worm with various smaller nymph patterns trailed behind. Aside from very small rainbows, I landed one fish, though he was the best fish I've brought to the net there so far. Right before dark I briefly hooked into a very large rainbow from a pod of of big fish I've been pestering all summer. This was the third time I've hooked one of these fish and all three times ended the same way. The fish ran full bore up stream and soon left me holding an empty leader while laughing and swearing simultaneously.

I also heard some very good news about the Yellow Breeches Outfitters. That its been sold to a person who intends to actually stock the shelves.

Hey Guys,
I see you both have Z-Axis rods. I have been looking for a new 10’ 4 weight and Heritage Angler suggested a Z-Axis as well. I take a lot of stock in what he recommends but I ‘m a little gun shy buying a rod without casting it. Heritage Angler also turned me on to a good price. Guess my question is would you recommend them as well? OBTW one of the streams I’ll be fishing is Big Spring.

So far I love living in Boiling Springs. It great being able to get on a nice trout stream without driving 3 hours first. As for the Z Axis, I just picked it up, now that it's on closeout I can finally (sort of) afford one. So far I love it too. It's my first 4 weight, always used a 5 before, and that rainbow was my first fish on it.

As for the YBO, I do know who bought it, he was fishing BS on Sunday too. I'll refrain from saying now however as I'm not sure it's my place to do so. I'm confident it's gonna be a good thing though.

I only recently got the Z but so far I love it. I've never been a fast action guy, frequently fishing with bamboo or early Orvis graphite from the late 70's, early 80's.

Like you, I got a really good price and didn't cast the rod before casting, which I don't like doing. I figured for what I payed I could always send it off to auction if I didn't care for it. That being said, it really is a sweet casting rod. It casts "easily" whereas in the past I always founds super fast rods demanding. They performed very well when cast properly, but the margin for error in casting form was much smaller. Being a solidly mediocre caster generally kept me away from them.

Mine is a 9' 4wt. I've never tried the 10' so I can't speak to it personally, but for a nymphing rig I'd bet it will be quite nice.

Yeah. I fished there just about 3 weeks ago. I parked at the upper lot at Fishermans Paradise and worked my way up stream. I was driving a brown Suburban. Did I run into you? I talked to several people that day.

Nope - not me. However, I do love that fly shop and hearing that the deal was done (or nearly done) recently was great news. Also, I have long eyeballed the small, vacant room on the side of the building. This had been Gerald Putt's art gallery some years ago and would be ideal for me......It's just not in the cards at this point.

I can dream about the some-day future though. 🙂
