Big Spring, Cumberland Co. 12/18/10

Fished Big spring last Saturday. I had a good day. Caught 10 fish. 7 were probably 8 inches or less and the other three were all 10-12 inches. caught most of them on a size 20 rs2, a few on a scud/cressbug looking fly, and 1 on a wooly bugger. Water temp was 49-50. air temp was in the high 20's. Saw a few rises, but not enough for me to put a dry on. I thought the one fish that i hooked, was probably about 11 inches, was going to get eaten by a bow that was about 2 ft. I hooked the fish in a riffle and he fought me back into a pool with some big rocks. The fish tried to hide behind a big rock that was apparently already occupied by a large, mean rainbow. I've seen trout chase each other around territorially; this didn't look like a territorial issue, the big bow looked like an easy meal fell into his lap and he darted out from behind the rock with his big mouth gaping. Luckily, i pulled the fish away just before the bigger one could get to him. Sight fished for the big boy for about an hour with no luck, probably because i didn't show him a foot long rainbow pattern. It was a nice day and a good cure for a little cabin fever. tight lines.

Great report! You have to love fishing spring creeks this time of year. I had a similar occurence 4 years ago on the Little Lehigh with a large brown greater than 2 ft in length attacking a 12" rainbow I was fighting. The brown grabbed the rainbow in the middle of the body and refused to let go. Eventually the brown grew tired of fighting me and the fish and released its grip. Luckily the little bow was released only missing a few scales.
