Big Spring, Cumberland Co., 06/30/2018

Time Fished: 05:30 pm-Dusk

Weather: Hot, with temps in the upper 80s, but the breeze and shade made it fairly comfortable.

Water: Gin clear and very cool to the touch. Made it tough to see the fly towards dusk with all the mist coming off the stream.

Hatches: Midge clusters, terrestrials (ants, beetles crawling around), caddis tan size 16 which were pretty sparse, but usually elicited a strike as they flittered downstream.

Fishing: I squeezed in a short trip, so I scouted around with an ant pattern and a small nymph dropper (size 20 pt). I switched over to a caddis dry towards dusk. I had a steady pick of mostly juvenile rainbows and a couple small brook trout mixed in. I only saw one large trout, but I was fishing slow. I know they are there, and I am looking forward to a return trip!!!

It's pretty but I always found the Letort to be more beautiful in the summer and big spring more beautiful in the winter. Especially by the large cress beds in the ATW.
Early morning steaming, bright sun and cress.... just heaven

I had a very similar day there today. In three hours, I landed seven rainbows and one brookie, and missed or LDR'd at least three times that number. The brookie, at 9 inches was the largest fish of the day. Like you, I was fishing slow. Just slapped on a size 16 Renegade and stuck with it. I wish I could have stayed until dusk.
