Drove 2.5 hrs yesterday in heavy rain to fish Big Spring Creek in Cumberland County for the first time. I was a little disheartened when I saw that the Conoduinget was brown and starting to flood. However, Big Spring was clear and had only slightly higher than normal flow. I got there at 8am and had the entire Fly Fishing section to myself until noon. Outside temp was in the 50's with light rain and water was upper 40's. Light midge activity and nothing else substantial. No risers. Saw very few fish exept for some inactive rainbows in the slow water above the little dam. Caught 2 nice streambred rainbows and 4 rainbow fingerlings, all on tiny BHPT's or zebera midge fished as a tandem. Everything I caught was in faster water without seeing the fish first; just searching. Spooked a large fish (brown or brook- not sure)that tried to swim under a stream improvement log where it got stuck. It thrashed and splashed until it got loose and dissapeared upstream. I was unable to connect any brookies as I was hoping to do. From what I have heard, I think I did pretty well for my first time there. Despite the problems with the stream that I have heard about, It seemed to be in excellent shape and the recent stream improvements seem well thought out.
