Big Pine, Tioga County, 5-15-12

Headed north to find better conditions as there was heavy rain in Coburn on Monday. I gave Sandfly a call and he said come on up. I arrived to find big Pine in fine shape, clear and at a very fishable level. Plenty of bugs were seen right away, march browns, grey fox, sulphurs and several different caddis. The fish came out to play early and I broke the first one off on a soft hackle. I switched to a sulphur emerger and picked up a slupring 15 inch brown.

The day ended with 3 or 4 browns and one rainbow. It was really worth the ride. Thank you Sandfly.

Good job beeber. My buddy Josh was up there over the weekend. He fished and met old lefty. The report I got was there were a fair amount of bugs and rising fish but lots and lots of kayaks / canoes. He took a good bow a few small browns and a nice sized brookie.
 
yeah we had a great time and even saw a few drakes..fish were thick and fiesty. Bill was scarin me though with his clown wading boots

krayfish, that area of pine is SOOOO different than up here its like night and day....

The hatchery fish have been coming out with that odd spotting pattern the last few years. Just a genetic trait that's been carried down a few generations now.
 
Interesting. Those large irregular spots really do look like brookie hybrid vermiculations to me, especially along the back toward the tail end.

Tigers are light vermiculations on a dark background, that fish is dark on light. Carry on. 🙂

I had heard them referred to as "German browns" last time we were at the mouth of Slate.
 
I fished Big Pine at Slate Run on Sunday. Caught and landed 3 German Browns all in the 20"-22" range. Caught them during the Grey Fox, March Brown Hatch. Tom Finkbiner at Slate Run Fly Shop, the McConnell's Country Store and Fly Shop and Mr. Straub, Straub Brewing Co. raise money, collect donations and then buy German Browns to stock. 250 went in behind and downstream at Slate Run Fly Shop, 100+ stocked upstream at the FireHouse Hole and then 50 more at Cedar Run confluence. These fish are heavy and very beautifully colored. More that Mr. Straub purchased are still to be stocked. Some will go to Little Pine. Saw a picture at Slate Run Tackle of one that was 27", 8.5 lbs. Each fish I landed took about 10 minutes to land. Great runs, ripping drag. My friend fished it Sunday from 3-till dark and landed 15 of the German Browns, all on dries.

I've also heard this term. There is a place to donate to the stocking effort at Wolfe's General Store. Pretty sure I got the biggest one of those they ever put in, so whenever I get up there I contribute to their funds. Seems fair.

there are several different strains of browns, german is one. state stocked twice, sportmans ***. stocked over 1000 (or near that) and a few private owners stocked close to 200 all over 14".. beeber was broke off and I have been broke off on 4x and 3x tippets, they are really good shape here..there a some in the 20 - 30 " class here now.

Never fished that area but fish breaking 3x makes me want to do the long drive. How long will it fish good or when does the water get to warm for trout fishing?

great report!!! I ended up on kettle creek yesterday...Caught a few for the first time being there and also caught a really nice buzz!!! Beeber2 I am sure you are really shocked after fishing with me for a couple of days that we caught a buzz
