Big Hunting Creek, Frederick Co., MD, 3/10/18

Was planning to head to the Savage this weekend but unfortunately plans changed and I decided to head to Big Hunting Creek. I just picked up an Orvis Superfine Glass 4 weight and couldn't think of a better place to break her in. I spent almost every weekend fishing here when I first picked up the fly rod a couple years back and its been nice to fish familiar waters.

Temps during the day reached the high 40s and saw plenty of insects on the move so I started with a dry dropper before switching to only a dry. Landed 10 small browns working the pocket water and casting to rising fish in some of the longer runs. Stopped by some smaller water above the lake and managed 1 small brookie after spooking plenty more.

All in all a great day and I am absolutely in love with the Superfine.

The coloring on that brookie is interesting and beautiful.

Nice report and beautiful fish. It is very enjoyable rock hopping on big hunting and fishing the pockets and eddies with a dry dropper combo on a light rod. I have always dreamed of taking a 18 inch plus brown out of there, but my max has been about 14. Fun little stream with an interesting history being so close to Camp David.

3wt7x 14 inchs is around the biggest I have caught as well but every time I go I wonder if there is one big boy hanging around. Luckily the surroundings and beautiful fish more than make up for the lack of size.

Which Superfine is that? I really like the 7 1/2 footer on that stream.

redietz its the 7'6" 4 weight. Its perfect for Big Hunting and a lot of smaller waters I like to fish.
