Big Hunting Creek, Frederick Co. MD, 07/22/12

With the USGS gage showing the Potomac River rising fast, I decided to scrap bassin this morning and hit Big Hunting Creek instead. I usually avoid BHC after about early July as it just tends to get bare bones low and slows to a trickle. However, with the recent cooler nights and significant rainfall, it seemed promising. I swapped out my felts for rubber soles (felt soles are banned in MD) but forgot my cleats. Walking was too treacherous on the wet boulders in the canyon so Benny and I drove up to the flat water by the Visitor Center and fished for about an hour.
The water level looked very nice - however the water temp was a rather warm 68 degrees. I saw few fishermen. Stretched out a long leader down to 6X and threw my favorite terrestrials in the usual pools. Caught nothing.

The Virginia side of the mac can run clear when the guage shows rising. It all depends on how much run-off the Shenandoah has had. I've experienced banner days from pt of rocks down to the mouth of the monacacy during those times. Many fish will hold on the mud line especially in times of really hot weather. Also, there are alot of springs that come in on the VA side from above the 15 bridge down to whites ferry. In fact, there's a nice spring creek that feeds into the mac below whites ferry on the va side a 1/2 mile down. The creek has wild bows in it, the mouth is excellent for muskies.

Sorry to hear about the bad luck at fishing creek. My favorite section is by the joe brooks memorial, minus the snakes 😉

Benny loves swimming and in the last couple years his old age has made him unable to swim without a doggie PFD (which you'll see him wearing in many pics). In this photo, he's just wearing his lease harness.

Benny and his gear (and mine)....were thoroughly cleaned. 🙂
