Time Fished: 830am - 1100am
Weather Conditions: Sunny Clear, 75 - 80 degrees
Water Conditions: Clear, 58 degrees
Insects: Some Caddis, looked like some small BWO hatching between 830 & 900am,a few other lighter mayflies but just 1 or 2, at 10am a decent number of spinners dancing over the riffle (I thought they might be Tricos but they seemed too large, I couldn’t catch any). Despite the spinners obvious presence in a few riffles, they didn’t bring any trout to the surface.
We fished below the Tylersville hatchery. Overall not a lot of insects and all rising ended when the sun got fully on the water about 920. I caught 4 small browns on a sz 16 Tan Caddis and lost a few others.
After 920am, when the trout stopped rising, I worked 2 separate riffles with the same tan caddis without bringing up a fish. This really was surprising. Caught 4 trout in first 20 minutes, then failed to even bring up a fish to look at the fly for the last 90 minutes. Seemed like the bright sunny sky sent the trout into hiding.
We decided to pack up and try our luck at Fisherman’s Paradise with the hopes that some fish would be midging and we could change flies until we found the right one. Unfortunately it was no better. I saw no insects and maybe 7-8 rises. The nine guys I talked to got 0, 2, 0, 0, 1, 1, 0, 0. We fished from about 1230pm to 2pm. I decided to try something that other people may not have tried so I fished a caddis dry (brought one fish up but it didn’t take) and on a streamer I had one flash at it.
It was just one of those days. After catching 4 so quickly at Big Fishing Creek, I said to myself that I was on my way to double digits. So much for that but it was a fun day with friend and family.
