I hit the BFC narrows yesterday and today. I'm quarantined away from my family with covid and fortunately it's not bad enough to keep me off the water. Beats bowl games full of second string players by a mile.
The weather and fishing was pretty similar both days so I'm not gonna write up individual cookie-cutter reports. Both days were partly cloudy and today spit a little. Air temps were mid 30s mid morning and rose to the mid 40s in the afternoon. There was a breeze both days that kicked up mid afternoon, nothing serious tho. I didn't temp the water, but it wasn't insanely cold - all hail the big Tylersville hatchery spring.
BFC is up and dirty, though it's clearing (today was noticeably clearer than yesterday). Visibility today was maybe 3' on average but varied in spots. It's about as high as I like to fish it which precludes some of my go-to wading opportunities, but for me at least that's a welcome trade off if it means there's some color in the water. Love BFC when it's colored up.
There wasn't much bug activity to speak of. Midges now and then and some tiny BWOs were around, but nothing in abundance. Yesterday I did see two violent, splashy rises, the only two rises I saw.
I euro nymphed both days. Yesterday I put in about 4.5 hours and caught 15 browns, but today I only lasted for 2.5 hours (stupid covid) and caught 2 browns and 2 brookies. Today I didn't fish as hard and spent most of my time exploring spots I don't regularly hit and eating a very large sub. I found a couple cool pools tucked way back in there and caught a stud in one of them. I'll be going back there. The sub was good too (PA's cheap sandwich game is unparalleled). Yesterday's fish were stacked up. I'd catch 3-4 fish in a 10' long section then nothing for a while. Also, some of my go-to skunk-busting spots weren't holding fish, or at least fish that wanted to eat what I was serving.
And as for what was on the menu, I wish I could say that all the tiny midges, perdigons, and iron lotuses that normally produce out there for me were what took fish, but no. I tried them all, but every fish I caught ate an egg. Whatever, trout eat eggs as my brother says. He never fishes eggs.
Speaking of eggs, there are lots or redds out there, beware. I didn't see fish on them tho.
