(Big) Fishing Creek, Clinton County, 10-10-13

I fished BFC yesterday with tyloomis from about 2-5:30. Water is low and clear and fish are spooky, but not impossible. Tan caddis were coming off fairly in decent numbers until it started to rain a little. We each caught some nice trout in the 12-14" range, some were colored up, but didnt get anything huge although we did see some big boys in a couple holes. Over all it was a good afternoon, maybe the rain in the next few days will help things out.

Now that is a Fishing creek brown.
Cant be sure if its no. 1, but that stream is in the top two of my favorite places to fish of all time.
Strangely enough, its not because of the piles of trout I catch there,
because I dont.
But the sheer quality of the fish....

Those BFC wild browns are special. I caught a nice 15-16" male last week in the open water below the regs. section. Took a size 16 black parachute ant right off the top in water as smooth as glass. That was the most exciting part to me. I LOVE BFC.

Fishing Creek is probably my #1 stream, and like squaretail said; not because of catching a lot of fish but because of the quality of the fish you do catch. Fishing creek was probably my hardest obstacle while I was in college learning to catch wild trout. I still remember my first trout there, it was during the grannom hatch, I worked and worked to catch a fish but couldn't. I was fiddling with something on my vest and didn't realize I had let my line flow down the stream and was about 20 feet below me. My peacock caddis had sank, and I wasn't paying attention, messing with my vest and all of a sudden my rod was about yanked out of under my arm. It was a total surprise and kind of made me mad that I worked hard and couldn't get one but at a stupid time of course one was there.
Fishing creek isn't a numbers stream, ive never had a double digit day there like you can on spring or on the little j. Back in the spring I came close with 8 but just couldn't get there. Its a far drive for me, but I never regret going there.

I too have never had a big number fish day on Big Fishing. But there is something very special to me about that stream. When I close my eyes at night, I often dream of it. When I need to escape while sitting in my cubicle, I think of it. It's everything a trout stream should be. Clean, cold water cutting through rugged, dark-forested mountain narrows. The fish are wild. The hatches consistent. I guess the way to describe it for me is, enchanted. And to paraphrase Norman Maclean, I am haunted by that water.
