Time Fished: 1120am - 500pm
Weather Conditions: 65 degrees, Full Cloud cover all day and windy
Water Conditions: 54 degrees, low and clear.
Insects: Probably saw about a dozen sz 18 Caddis flying around. A few different dark mayflies were hatching sz 20 & sz 18. I didn’t catch any. The mayflies I saw on the water were coming down the riffle and there was a decent amount of rising in the riffle so some were probably getting eaten. Only saw about 10 flying to cover.
Decided my trip to the 100th Pitt-Penn St game would not be complete without taking Friday off to fish near State College. I chose Big Fishing Creek and hoped to make it over to Spring creek, but that was too ambitious. I fished the upper end, the middle and the lower end of the BFC Trophy Trout section. The fishing was about the same everywhere. I had a few strikes at each location, when I began casting to rising fish they’d stop rising, saw few insects and the water level was really low and some water was barely moving. The rises were a mixture of small sips and very aggressive swirls, so they were eating something large at least part of the time. All vehicles were in the lower half of the section. Lots of green moss around.. I was even catching it on my dries so nymphers would not be pleased.
I had 5 misses and caught 2 small brook trout. I saw one dead brown, about 8-9 inches. I used 2 types of beetles, a caterpiller, 2 types of Caddis, a small mayfly and after I’d fished a very deep hole very thoroughly with dries, I actually ran a large streamer through it just to do something very different and possibly stimulate a strike on a very dark day from a decent size fish that definitely lived there. I did have one strike on the streamer but the fish was small.
Overall, a day that I enjoyed, but one that requires some thought about how to approach it differently next time those conditions are encountered.
