Fished Big Fishing creek yesterday, had an awesome day! Caught 15, landed 1/2 of them. Greenie weenie was the ticket with a curly sighter! That is such a beautiful stream, it wouldn't have mattered if I didn't catch any it was so beautiful. Stream is still so low. Fished just upsteam of the hatchery. Just curious, haven't fished that crrek much, is the rest of the special reg area full of pocket water? Here are some pics

Nice...I fished BFC last summer with my brother when some slate drakes were coming off. I landed a brown very similar to the one in your first pic. I love that stream...you can catch wild brookies and 14 inch browns on the same day.

Big Fishing Creek (also known as "fishing creek") is a very diverse stream with pools, limestone influence, pocket water, and even sections where it flows underground. Much of the special reg section is mixed pools and pocket water known as the "narrows."
Just speaking for myself, catching fish on BFC was never something I've been good at. If you time it right, esp when bugs are hatching, there are fish everywhere and they're easy to catch. Come back the next day and the fish are seemingly gone. I've found this stream to be very hot and cold.....mostly cold for me.

Here's some advice, I started long line nymphing with a coiled indicator a year a half ago and it is the most productive method of catching fish. There is no drag and you are always in contact with you flies. Also the flies you use ar heavily weighted. I always fish. Problem is you can't really use it for lond sections of flat water. The fly rod I use is also a 3wt and it's 10' long. It's also called euro nymphing. If you want to catch more fish you should look into it, it's deadly! For example I fished the quitty(my local creek) for years with not much luck at every outing, now I go and I usually always catch fish. This spring I caught 15 there which is unheard of for me.

p.s. forgot to mention, that was my second outing there.
 
Great stream, with some beautiful fish, one of my favorite streams. I want to learn more about the water below the narrows, next year I'll try to venture down there more often!

I agree BFC can be very good. But I get skunked there more than any other water I fish. I think that is why I love it so much. It is a challenge and I think many of the trout there possess college degrees! LOL. Paul try that I think you'll like it.
 
Easy PaulG...you need permission from me to venture outside of the narrows! First post in a long time for me! Just been too busy and streams too low!

Hi John

I have been wondering what happened to you, it's been awhile. I did stop at a couple of those places you told me about, with some luck, will have to get down there more often next year.

The last time I was up at the camper, I went over to BFC. IOt was the lowest I have ever seen it.

I want to buy a cabin in the homeowners association. Have never seen one for sale. Bet I would have a lot of friends if I did!

Took a friend there that wanted to learn nymphing. He caught seven, then we drove to Penn's and he caught 6 more!
 
I absolutely love spending time on Big Fishing Creek, one of my very favorite trout streams. A special place.

JerseyGeorge, I saw two cabins for sale up there on my last trip up the first weekend in October.

Yeah, at least I think I remember seeing two in the narrows the last time up.
 
I will have to check that out. They don't go up for sale very often. I was down there last Tuesday but never saw any signs. Maybe I missed them because I kept looking at the water LOL!
 
It's Fishing Creek on all the maps. Big Fishing Creek is in Columbia Cty.
 
To many locals of which I am one it is refered to as "Big Fishing Creek. So as not to confuse it with "Fishing Creek" in Columbia County I think we should rename it and call it "The Great Limestone"or something like that LOL!
 
Just noticed you were from Loganton WildTigerTrout...my grandparents live there and my mom grew up there. Truth be known I'm related to half the valley.
 
I'm related to half the valley too. Maybe we are related who knows. My Mom grew up here also. Don't you just love BFC.
 
That's a nice Brown in your Avatar! How big was he?
 
22" is that one...goal is getting a wild one thats 24. My mom was a Lamey. Grandparents live by the ball fields in town.
 
BigJohn58, I'm still working on a 20" Wild Brown. 19" is my largest. I just can't seem to break that barrier. It's really fun trying though. LOL.
