Well I got out to California a day early to fish. Tried a stream that I had hit a couple of times prior but only a few hundred yards each time. Today I hiked in about a mile or so and it was worth the trip. I had surface activity all afternoon but only about 25% hookups. Had a nice 10" bad boy (which for this creek is a monster) but lost him trying to net him. All of these fish are native California rainbows.

Kind of nice to fish in January in 70 degree weather. 😎

My daughter lives in LA (actually Long Beach) and like you said, the weather is perfect every day. They don't have a AC in their apartment (only two blocks from the ocean), because they don't need one. Every day spring, summer, fall, winter, the temp is right around 68 to 70! Mist on the Palm Trees every morning, so it never rains there either?

I visit her every year. I saw the streams around, especially north of LA (I didn't bring my fly rod ..... next time for sure?), but I only went fishing in the Pacific near Long Beach. (I saw lots of great ocean perch fishing right from the surf..... with a 6wt). All the way from LA right down to Mexico, the ocean perch are packed in the first wave? I see sardines also, like the size trout you caught, everywhere...... that's why so many pelicans all over the place?

I don't want to highjack your thread (and I love trout the best), but here are a couple pix from my ocean fishing. The Pacific is so much deeper and cleaner than the Atlantic. One block off shore, and we were in 120' of water.

In the following pix is me (the 1wt) with a rent-a-rod in his hand. We caught a bunch of Scorpion Fish (great tablefare, the mate filleted them) and we ate a some of the fillets that very night.

PS - Great food also, the world's best restaurants are in LA! I can't live there or I will get too fat! LOL

If any of my PAFF brethen are coming to SoCal and want some advice of streams or a guide, just PM me. I have now caught fish (native bows and wild browns) in 5 different streams, biggest being maybe 12" but some of the prettiest scenary around. The other advice I would give is not to use metal studded boots. Most of the streams are nothing but granite boulders and trust me when I tell you, it is like ice skating with studs. I was much more comfortable yesterday without them. No more pics, rest of the week is work. :-(

Not sure if anyone saw it (it is national news so I'm sure most of you did) but there was a horrible tour bus crash out here in CA on Highway 38. That is a beautiful mountain road that I use to get to the Santa Ana River out here. I have nver driven it after dark and couldn't imagine how dark it must be. My prayers to the victims and their families.

Sure I know that is Jack Black, and he was really on my plane (a little humor from the 1wt). And yes, they are real pix of me (1wt) on a boat near LA, California. My daughter really lives there (she's a RN at LA Hospital) ...... it's a paradise! Next time I'll hookup with Foxgap, and post some fly fishing pix.

I kept a low profile only because I was worried that if Maurice knew who I was....... he would insist that I join TU? I fly fish Muddy Creek FFO all the time, and I have never seen Maurice?

And thanks, Christopher Walkins is my fave actor...... he is really a "cool" guy!

My best friend lives in Fresno California and you can see the Sierra Nevada Mountains from his house on clear days. Were you close to that area by any chance? I have only been there once and didn't get a chance to fish because I was there for his wedding. My friend claims to be a fly fisherman and really like it but since he has been living in Cali I don't think he has wet a line and he has been there for over 3 years now.

I would really like to fish the Kern River and even possibly head up to fish in the Redding California area on some of the spring creeks there.

I am not a wine and cheese kind of guy but I think a good combo would be wine tasting on off days and fly fishing the rest. I need to make this happen!

No where near Fresno. I was in LA County although I do want to head north one of these days. But when work pays all the freight and I can find wild trout fishing on their dime, I'll take what I can get.

Lived in northern Cali for a few years. The fishing is really under rated.
