Wouldn't have posted this report in the old days, but now that the stream reports section is members-only, I feel a little better about it.
I travel home from DC to the West Chester PA area every so often, and have been looking for a decent stream to stop at along the way. Though I didn't find anything crazy here, I think I may have found what I was looking for - a short section of a pretty stream with a handful of wild trout that I can stop and fish for an hour to break up the drive.
I found some access near the lower end of the stream away from the houses. It appears to be a popular spot for the locals judging by graffiti on the rocks and old railroad bridges.
I had never fished a Cecil County stream before, and wasn't sure what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised to find some nice rocky pools and pocket water. Small wild browns were present in the spots you'd expect them to be, but I get the impression there aren't that many in there. The only fish I brought to hand was an 8" wild brown trout, though I missed a few others. Nothing of size. I talked to a local who said the smallish fish are pretty typical there and I can't say I saw anywhere that looked promising for larger fish.
Fly of choice was an olive woolly bugger. The stream made for an enjoyable hour on the water during a month where I've hardly found time to fish at all. That one small brown was my first wild trout from Cecil County, and this stream became the 53rd MD stream in which I have caught at least one wild trout. Hope I'm not outing someone's spot, but I know there are a few MD/DE/far southeast PA guys here who might be interested in trying it.
