....rod companies, in this case Orvis, design monkey-wrenches in lower priced offerings so they don't compete with their upper $$$ offerings. Trident fly fishing reviewed the Orvis Recon 3. In it, the reviewer's assessment was that the Generation 1 Recon was maybe a little TOO good, so Orvis designed in less crispness and added weight, making a clearly inferior rod. This as an assertion I have made several times over the years. The new Recon is much better, he says, as in , they learned a lesson.

Do you actually expect their mid line rods to be as "good" as their top end models that are 300-400 dollars more? I would hope there is a noticeable difference. I don't know though as they are way out of my price range. My Redington Classic Trout was my most fished rod this year.

Fwiw, I've thought every generation of the Recon was a better buy than the corresponding model-year Helios. However at the current prices I don't think either are really "worth it." Less expensive rods are just getting too good and the material differences between a $300 and a $1000 are really very small. We see this when companies who don't play in the $1k market are free to design and sell fantastic rods at more reasonable prices. Rod companies undercutting themselves with their own mid range products further exposes this.

First gen Recon is a amazing rod, my personal favorite. I've fished the 2nd gen a handful of times with guides and enjoyed it as well. Didn't notice the weight.

I'm not in the market for a new rod, but if I were it would probably be the new gen Recon or a Scott rod of some sort.

T3s were good enough for me, now I use their glass rod. Just saw loomis put out $1700 rod. Sorry, off topic I guess.

Dear RH1,

If you buy the "right" waders, wading boots, reel, line, and rain jacket you can drop well over $ 3G's to go fishing and still not be able to fish worth a crap!

But you'll look the part!

Love my old school two piece rods, Orvis, Sage and Berkley. Before you laugh at my two piece 5wt 9’ Berkley Expert this was our back up fly rod for our steelhead trips. On one of those trips my Sage 8wt got closed in the tailgate……that backup Berkley 5wt handled a couple nice steelhead and one large brown trout on Salmon River.

I still take that Berkley with us as a back up. I miss that these manufacturers don’t produce two piece rods anymore. So I am stuck purchasing used two piece rods on fleabay…as I need them.

Actually have a bid in now on a nice two piece Orvis 9’ rod. Monday I’ll see if I win it…

For sure, but it's a poor sawyer who blames his saw.

If you are good at something you can be good at it regardless of what you hold in your hands.

My other hobby is photography. I can produce a perfectly exposed, and focused picture with any camera I hold in my hands. What I can't consistently produce is an interesting picture, for I just don't have the "eye."

But I can fish just fine!

My FIL gave me a 2 piece 8'6" 5w Sage VPS (allegedly an RPL blank with cheaper components). It's one of my favorite rods. Definitely the best caster I have, but it's a little short to be my #1.
