Aylesworth Creek - Lackawanna Co.

Anyone fish this creek?

I went out to check it out since it was one Of the few “Class A“ streams reasonably close by.

Bupkis…

No fish landed… no takes… no short strikes… didn’t even spook a fish… this is starting to feel like my standard day of fishing in PA 🙂

Water was CRYSTAL clear… lots of junk left behind by campers… very disappointing to see old chairs, dry rotting tarps collapsed tents etc.

Anyone have any tips on how to move a fish in this creek?

Where did you fish it? In the lower end or further up?

Many of the streams in that area go dry in their lower stretches, because the water goes down into the deep mines. But further up they flow normally.

Take one with you? I believe Aylesworth Lake is a put and take fishery, but that is my thought. YMMV

Seriously, were you trying the outflow below the dam or the inflow above?

if you would like to go out this week, let me know and maybe we can show you some better places to go.

I parked near Aylesworth Creek Lake (reservoir?) and fished about a half mile or so of the stream above the lake.

I was fishing above the lake… supposed to be Class A trout water…

I’d love to hook up with someone who knows some good spots.

Friday is probably my best day this week.
 
I fished that one a couple times two years ago. Decent numbers of brook trout when I was there, but that could have changed. I remember seeing one big one a couple hundred yards above the lake which I took to be a stocker since I know they stock the lake with brook trout. I’ve been about 3/4 of a mile up from the lake, and it turned into a rhododendron hell. My sense was there were a good number of fish, but it was extremely difficult to present a fly without spooking them. Also fished in the ravine below the dam with no success, though operator error is always a possibility.

I found Rhododendron Hell for sure! Also TONS of deadfall all over the place… at first I would fish a spot and then take the time to clear things out for my next trip. But realized that this was futile… just too much debris to knock a dent in. Not sure there’ll be a next trip now.

Perhaps I was just too much of a clod, and was spooking fish long before I got a fly in front of them.
 
Friday, 11 to 2 are blocked off but Wednesday and Thursday are open, so far.

Not to make you think I am a great (or even good ) fly fisher but here are some Lackawanna fish photos:" When I think of it, I am more the Blind Squirrel type!

I went bluelining on Sunday and the water was very low and clear. The creek I fished usually fishes very well, but I only managed two brookies and wild brown. When the creek is like that stealth really comes into play. Keep at it you'll find them. Wish I could help you more with the Lackawanna but I don't know it that great myself. Some days you hit it and there are lot of fish and then some days you would think they all left.

I drive up the turnpike to fish the Lackawanna once each year. Last year I did it in June and when the water temps warmed up around 12pm I headed up to Aylesworth for colder water. I fished it for probably half a mile just above the lake for about 30 minutes and caught 3 or 4 small brookies. It did not strike me as a very impressive fishing creek so I was grateful to catch a few. No plans to return.

Its a small creek, but There are a number of deeper holes that would sustain bigger fish…

I’m unfamiliar with, “bluelining” please enlighten me!
 
Well you pick a blue line on a map and fish it. It's great if you like hiking and Pennsylvania has 86,000 miles of stream so a lot to pick from. Sometimes you find a gem, sometimes there aren't any fish, and sometimes the stream is dried up. It's surprising where you find fish sometimes. You're not fishing for monsters but very rewarding. Lots of accessable brook trout streams on the state game lands and forest.

I guess that’s what I’ve been doing then… I’m a fairly new PA resident, and havent Flyfished in a few years. So I picked up a map book and cross reFerenced Class A and wild trout streams to the map, and started fishing.

Leggets creek yielded fish… the others not so much… the quest continues...
