Allegheny River DHALO Potter County 7/4/08

Amazing how small this stream can be. Spectorfly took me up to where it first crosses the road. Hard to believe it is the same stream in Pittsburgh. I could jump over it.

We fished about 1/4 the DHALO area and saw some fish rising. I couldnt get them to take a dry fly. Being that this was near a bridge I would imagine they get heavy pressure here.

Downstream of that we caught numerous trout on woolly buggers and nymphs. Seems there are alot of fish still in the stream. They are just hiding in any deeper water. Which you will be hard pressed to find. The water was very low. However the fish are there and eager to bite. Spectorfly caught a trout with whirling disease the poor thing.

I wasent very impressed with this stream. It is very structureless and not very good habitat. Not what I expect to see out of a DHALO area in northcentral pa. In fact not what I expected out of a north central pa stream at all.

I think Maurice fished it at last years jam...maybe Jack, I forget...there are some pics on the Jam page...was it the same section...might be hard to tell with the water levels being different.

I think jack did fish it. I believe a giant brookie was caught by someone in his party.

I have a picture or two on my computer at home. We fished it behind a PennDOT or County Road Dept. Facility. Despite near drought conditions, the water was cool up that way. Brandon did catch a hog of a stocked brook trout and the rest of us caught a few normal trouts.

Poor physical habitat is very common on many stretches of NC PA freestone streams. It's a major limiting factor on trout populations in this region. (And other parts of the state too.)
