John Voelker, who also went by the pen name of Robert Traver, was a lawyer, author and fly fisherman who lived in the upper pennisula of Michigan. Norman Mcclean grew up in Missoula, MT and later became an English Professor at the University of Chicago. Both men wrote about, among other things, families, fly-fishing, love, death, and a time when virtually all hard work in this country was still done by hand.
I believe that you owe it to yourself to have all 4 of these books in your library. They are each in very good-to excellent condition, and I’d prefer to sell them together for $50.00, picked up in New Holland, PA or nearby in the Lancaster area. I’ll also ship them in the US for the actual shipping cost, paid by PayPal.
You’re likely already familiar with 3 of these books, but you may not know of Mcclean’s book “Young Men and Fire.” This is a captivating book about a team of smoke jumpers (young firefighters) who parachuted into a remote mountainous section along the Missouri River, most of whom died when the wind changed and trapped them in the canyon.
Today, you can take a boat tour into that area from the Gates of the Mountain, a few miles north of Helena, MT, or (if you don’t mind driving on a section of 4 wheel drive dirt road you can drive into. It is one of my all time favorite places to fish, to take the Gates of the Mountain boat tours, and it’s a place that Gary LaFontaine once wrote ‘The largest trout in the river, and possibly in the country live…(there).
…Which is why, if you buy these 4 books, I’ll also include a copy of an article that LaFontaine wrote many years back for Fly Fisherman magazine called “The Missouri Nobodly Knows.” Today, a lot more people know about those parts of the Missouri River than they did in LaFontaine’s time, but there are still parts of the river that see few fisherman throughout much of the year, and where there are many giant trout.
