16 mile and 20 mile, Erie County 10/18-10/19

I took my group of students to Erie during fall break and we fished 16 and 20 mile on Monday and Tuesday.

Three rookies on the fly rod and steelhead. Fished 16 miles where 8 guys stood over the large, deep hole in front of the cottages. Watched them hook and land a few there. Found fish in a small waterfall maybe 200 yards down stream from the bridge over rt. 5. One rookie hooked up there and landed his first steelhead. If you haven't been to 16 mile this year...the entire lower creek has changed channels completely. Last year the water near the cabin and this year is is rushing down next to the park. A lot less holes to fish at this time.

Went to 20 mile that evening and fished with some friends at the big hole near the parking lot. Hooked and caught many fish using light sucker spawn and egg patterns.

Returned to 20 mile on Tuesday. Our sole female flyfisher hooked and landed her first fish on a flyrod...a 9 lb hen. Also first fish since she was five. Hot fly was green caddis patterns in fast water.

Air temp both days was high 40s-low 50s.

Great job. Getting rookies to hook up for the first time is always a thrill. Ask Alby how good he felt letting me catch a steelie out of his secret pocket. I was on a rookie streak, except for a sucker and jack, all season to that point.

Sounds like you guys did better than me (which in this case wouldn't be hard) - I hit 20 mile on Tuesday got thoroughly skunked. I'm man enough to admit it.

In my defense we got there late and left early - so we only fished during the brightest part of the day, after everyone else had been through, but still...I should have picked up a few. And to paraphrase Mike Tomlin; That would be an excuse and we don't make excuses.

We fished in the gorge area and there we ok numbers of fish up there. Did you fish the section near the lake?

I'll have to try some green caddis next time - thanks for the report.

Nice work nothing better IMO than getting others into fish. The smiles are bigger than yours. Maybe they will start chipping in for the gas on the ride up.
