Bamboo

Its never too late to re-build the arsenal, but as many others will also advise, beware: its a sickness!

My wife-who is the book keeper of my $- is very close to cutting off my funding for 'new to me' toys! 😫

Right now, am about to do a ferrule wrap on a repair to a Lyon & Coulson #313 I picked up last month. 🤠

During my fly fishing life I've bought or built at least 75 rods. Over the past few years I've been selling them off so my wife doesn't have to deal with them when I pass. I only have maybe 10 fly rods left.

My wife & I have always had separate discretionary spending accounts. She never knew what or when I was buying a new rod or reel.

I wish I had all the cane rods I sold back when I thought I didn't want them anymore. Leonard's, Orvis, Gillums, Thomas.
Dear wbranch,

I have a rather large but pedestrian collection of bamboo rods. Mostly South Bends, Heddons, and Grangers. From 7 ft to 9 ft in weights from 4 to 8 I'm covered for all of my fishing pursuits.

I did cast a Gillum at a bamboo rod gathering over 20 years ago. It was the most beautiful casting rod I ever held in my hands, without question. It was in mint unrestored condition. I asked the owner what a rod like that was worth and he said, "around $ 8,000.00 give or take." I immediately stopped casting it and gingerly handed it back to him.

I do own a WR Taylor rod that was Bill Taylor's personal rod. I know because I asked him about it before I bought it and he told me the whole story. He's a friend of mine and I had always wanted one but simply couldn't pay the freight for one. Getting one for half the current going rate was a score for me and makes me feel connected to Bill though he lives far from his Cumberland County roots!

Regards,

Tim Murphy 🙂

One day my wife was complaining about all my fishing and hunting equipment. She argued she would have a tough time once I pass. Son, who was standing nearby, said "don't worry mom, I'll take care of it."

Such a great addiction that bamboo is. 🙂 Pretty much all I fish from Chinese beaters to T&T's, I got one for pretty much all the fishing I do. I haven't picked up a graphite rod in a few years now.
