I am coming up with our wrestling team from NC for a week at Bucknell U (wrestling camp) the second week of July. I would love to try and take advantage of the situation and get in some flyfishing. Any suggestions on shops, guides, water in that area?
Thanks a bunch,
Marty

You have Penns Creek Angler at the lower end of Penns and The Feathered Hook at the upper end of the special regs area. You can check their WEB sites for stream reports.

There is also White Deer Creek. Best access from Lewisburg is go out Rt 192 to RBWinter State Park. Get a forest map and go over the hill north of the park a few miles until you hit the stream at McCall's Dam.

These are local trout options. So far the temps have been good.

Some years Penns gets warm late July and early August. Check the two shops listed above just before you go. They will also have flies specifically for Penns and other local streams.

These shops also can point you to some local brookie streams such as Weikert Run Buffalo Creek, etc.

Spruce Run is another brookie stream that suffers during low water years but may be ok this year. Go up to West Milton on Rt 15. Take SR1004 west to Spruce Run Road. Follow that behind the reservoir and look for state forest signs. Should be a parking lot there. Hike south on the trail to find th estream.

The courthouse which is right on the main street just off Bucknell campus can supply licences. Go to the county treasure's office.

BTW do not speed in Hartleton on 45. They have speed traps there.

Thanks Franklin,
That is great insight.

Penns is holding temps right now, but if we get a heat wave in the next two weeks, it will be out. Keep in mind that numerous sunny days in the low to mid 80s and overnight lows in the mid 60s could make Penns too warm very quickly

Fishing Creek near Lamar PA is the best bet if the temps are high. I am amazed at how cool that stays even in the hottest of summers.

Bass on the W. Branch Suskie!! Doesn't matter if it's hot out! They will be there!

IT doesn't take a lot of sunshine to warm the streams up. They warm up on cloudy days too, I suppose there is enough sunlight getting through to warm streams. Mosy of our state forest streams that hold wild populations of trout stay plenty cool over the summer. If youPM me I'll give you a short list. But you'll need a 7'6" or shorter rod.

Good choice coming to PA for a wrestling camp. Everyone knows PA>NC in wrestling ;-).

By mid July, Penns Creek will probably be fairly warm during the day. The day time temperatures will be near or above 70 degrees for a few hours every day. If you want to fish Penns, I would try the area near coburn. I would also stick to fishing during the early or late parts of the day.

You might want to try out Rapid Run. You can get there by going west on Rt. 192. Parts of that stream have wild brown trout, and since it is heavily wooded, the water stays cool.
