Access to Spring Creek is now available, so this won't change. However, if they sell off the farm land and replace it with an industrial park and blacktop........
who knows what will happen

I realize that 650 people are employed at SCI Rockview, but it's hard to believe there is much logic in keeping a 110 year old prison open. I'd have to suspect that place is as energy inefficient as they come and just a nightmare to maintain.

Thanks for sharing that one. Let's hope the direction after closing is one for better public interest. This general area is seeing a lot of pressure. More natural protection and less asphalt would be much better.

That’s the big problem. The cost to renovate and bring the facility up to modern standards. It’s hard to believe fewer prisoners is the problem, unless it’s related to city DAs not prosecuting or downgrading crimes. Not 100% sure but huntingdon is as old or older. That place looks medieval

The population of inmates is roughly 15,000 less than when i started the DOC in 2008. That has more to do with non-violent offender sentencing programs and less harsh parole violation punishments/return to custody cases. Most facilities are running well below capacity and a lot are having staffing issues. Huntingdon is older but allegedly costs less to run and maintain. SCI Benner is Rockview's sister facility and is a very large facility. They can absorb a decent amount of staff and will maintain a lot of the outside programs that Rockview currently does. Rockview is also very understaffed at the moment. Hopefully the access and surrounding areas around Spring are protected.

Why is it so hard to believe that crime is down when we live in an era with cameras pointing at us everywhere, cell phones tracking our every movement, social media's ability to spread news and DNA able to prove almost anything?

They own a lot of forest land also, on Tussey Mountain. Including a small stream that reportedly has native brook trout.

There is a road that goes from route 150 , under I-99, and down to the old bridge in the canyon
And has always been closed off
I wonder if it possibly might be opened up after the prison is closed
Would make for easier access to the gorge

Bill I was thinking the same thing. Is that the access called Rockview Road from 150?

Be careful with your wishes. Keeping easy access to the Spring Ck canyon closed allows those willing to walk to get away from crowds at sulphur time.

IDK, but I hope not.
I also hope not. Most of Spring Creek has easy vehicle access.

The canyon is special because it is a fairly long stretch that does NOT have vehicle access. That's a rare thing in an urban area, and it is what makes it an oasis.

Yet it is still accessible. It's very easy walking on the gravel service road.

BTW, I'm not for it either.
Just wondering if they might consider it
