I'm looking for suggestions for magnifiers to aid me in tying tie on my flies. My old glasses were good enough up until this year, but I'm struggling in ow light. Is there anything beyond the kind that flip down from your hat brim? Thanks

Were your old glasses prescription bifocals? If prescription but not bifocals, would bifocals help?

In regards to flip-down magnifiers, that's all I've been using for decades but unfortunately the best out there, Hat Eyes are no longer being manufactured although a FEW fly shops may still have inventory.

I always had trouble with hat magnifiers - just can't get focus right. I do better with reading glasses. Maybe try a higher power like 4X?

You need the correct working distance which isn't always available depending on the brand.

Hat Eyes are/were unique because they offered different powered lenses AND the lenses themselves could slide back on forth on the hat bracket to fine tune that working distance if necessary

I wear progressive eyeglasses full time. I use the Carson hat magnifiers and find them perfect for my needs. I use them on the stream for tying on small flies as well as at my tying bench while tying flies. I’m not understanding the problem with focal point. They are magnifiers not glasses. It’s not how far the magnifiers are to your eye that matters it’s how far the object you’re looking at is to the magnifiers. Just move the fly closer or further away until it is in perfect focus. I can see the fly fine if the magnifiers are all the way against my glasses or as far away as my hat brim allows. The little rectangle ones that attach to the hat brim suck but the full Carson’s are far superior IMHO. I usually have them out a bit so I can angle them slightly upwards so I can look under them as well, all while leaving my prescription glasses on. I would think they would be even better if I didn’t have to wear glasses.

I get reader magnifiers cheap from amazon so when I drop them in the creek it doesn't hurt so bad..

This year I am using the fly threader shown above and it works great once you try it at home a few times.

Is this style cumbersome? Does it weight on your hat brim?

You gave me a good idea. Maybe I should take an old pair of bifocals and have my eye doctor increase the magnification to 4x.

My Simms clipper has one of those built in.

I use a headlamp even in daylight to put light where I need to see, after multiple visor magnifiers I'm back to reading glasses (3.25) and I can tie anything I need. Headlamp makes a world of difference.

I have headlamps but never considered bringing one for daytime. Makes sense though. Thanks!

I actually modified my Hat Eyes hat brim magnifier and added a Princeton Tech Impulse LED light to the clip which gives me a flip down light on my visor over my magnifier when needed. 😉

I also have a Princeton Tech Tech Point on my visor.

Does that mean you have to pairs of glasses with one pair sunglasses?

They are light and I don’t even know they are up there. They are big so I keep them in the forward up position and flip them down from front to back (towards eyes) as opposed to folded up under the hat and flipping them down from back to front. When flipping them back to front my eye glasses get in the way which is why I go the other way. I wouldn’t call them cumbersome though. Way better than fumbling around and switching between my prescription glasses and readers. For ten bucks they are the best solution to your problem.

I'm sorry I repeated my question.
