Grasshoppers . . . Where are they?

I have seen 1-2 in south central PA. Fields used to be loaded with them.

You seeing them in your area?

Sw PA here.

No. I live beside a field that used to be full of them. My cat used to catch one daily and bring it in the house as an offering to us. It's been a 3 or 4 year decline and I haven't seen any this year, only a few last year.

They have been replaced by lantern flies, but the cat has a harder time catching those.

VERY few in the Cumberland Valley this year - though my front yard has a bumper crop of juvenile crickets

I've seen very few this year in SE PA. A lot of people in my area have their lawns treated for mosquitos, I'm starting to think there is some kind of connection there

On a similar note, has anyone noticed that seeing a Praying Mantis is pretty much a rarity anymore? I saw just two this year, and they were both very tiny, which I guess is a good thing.

This is the last adult I've seen, way back in 2019. A great example of Mother Nature's camouflage.

I saw some on my run through the Milton Hershey farmlands today. Definitely fewer the last number of years.

I was just commenting to my wife earlier today that it must have been a good year for mantises. I saw a few dozen this year. Accidentally got a few with the lawn mower.

I’ve seen a huge decrease in lantern flies over the last couple years. I’m in SE PA, I’d say right around Covid time there was thousands, this summer I’ve maybe seen 10. Are they just working their way west towards you guys?

I agree, thier numbers are waaay down here in SE Pa. I've seen less than ten this summer. I'm good with that!

Same! Those things are gross. I do feel like overall bug numbers are probably on the decline. Too many people spraying pesticides and developments popping up

Hoppers were thick in my neck of the Adirondacks last summer. I recall hikes where the entire trail in front of me was popping.

This year I've seen some, but it's been very sparse. I've seen them around suburban areas more than out in the woods, as well.

Maybe that's why my terrestrial fishing has been slow this year? Either that or, ya know, the complete lack of water.

Dear Letort,

Starting in early August most years since I moved here in 2002, I used to have hundreds of them in my yard every Summer. My dogs, all of them over the years, used to amuse themselves by catching them and spitting them out.

I haven't seen one this year, and maybe only saw a dozen or so over the last 3 or 4 years. Last year I saw one and took a picture of it because I was amazed it showed up.

Regards,

Tim Murphy

One of my boys got a salt gun to shoot lanternflies from his front stoop. Maybe lanternflies are displacing hoppers - at least in SC PA.
Today at work as it was raining down lanternflies on me I thought “I should get a salt gun here”…I’m sure it’s been discussed many times but seems the fish won’t eat them..assuming they don’t or lanter-flies would be the rage.

I was in a wooded area this evening in Dauphin County and saw a bunch of grasshoppers. I saw your post earlier today and tried to get a picture, but they were too quick and flew away.

I have seen very few grasshoppers this year. The sacred lands of the WW Jam are usually crawling with them, but not this year. I saw a single praying mantis this year, and that was just the other day.

Edit: Apparently I didn't read Tom's post. He saw the hoppers at the Jam. Well, maybe I just don't pay attention.

Yup. The invasion is over in SEPA. The last few years I saw a few here and there, this year none at all.

I usually see a bunch of praying mantises, but this year just one (and my dog ate it) 🙁
