Closest fly shop

Just wondering if anyone know of any fly shops near me. I live in glenside. about 10 minutes outside of philly.The closest one that I know is orvis up in the Plymouth meeting mall. I did see a place called franks fly shope in Elkins Park but not sure if its open or not. Looks like a desist off when you walk in. Been out to the TCO but is a bit pricy IMO. The guys there are cool and give great info but is like a half hour drive. Just looking for a place that sell good tying material.

There is Dave's Sporting Goods/Outfitters on 611 in Doylestown. (Pretty good selection and decent customer service) I normally go here for my needs.

Claytons is also on 611 in the Hatboro/Horsham area (very limited selection)

Our neck of the woods (i live in Philly) is quite limited.

Cabela's is about 1 1/2 hours away and same with Bass Pro shop.
 
Sporting gentlemen is expensive too, I think they are associated with orvis. For tying material I would suggest ordering online from performance flies.
 
Anglers Pro Shop on Old Rt 309. To get on old rt 309, take the right hand exit off 309 right before Montgomeryville Cycle Center and stay on that road he is up on the right at the top of the hill. Old A frame shop set back on a gravel parking lot. They have a fly tying group that meets on Thurs nights. No one is going to be as cheap as the catalogs/internet. Retail stores have a hard time competing with overhead. But I still try retail first to give them support plus I like to pick out my own necks. I don't mind paying a little more, I just don't want to get gouged.

FWIW, I've found TCO's prices for tying materials to be in line with other shops. Their house brand of fly hooks are an excellent value and their selection of materials is pretty good and usually well stocked.

I doubt you are going to find a shop selling quality materials that is significantly cheaper than any of the others.

P.s. Many guys would kill to have a shop like TCO only 30 min away.
 
There used to be an Orvis Shop in Bryn Mawr, but the last time I was there was about 97. Anglers Pro Shop or the shop in Lansdale are next closest. After that would be Dave's in Doylestown or Plymouth Meeting Orvis.
But if you really want to find everything you can try Cabelas, though it still wouldn't be my choice, just on general principle.
Everything other then Lansdale or Anglers Pro is more then an hour away. You'll just have to trust me on that, I know my way around PA, especially SE PA. It was my business to know how to get from anywhere to anywhere. And do it quick.
 
There's probably not much in the 10 minute range near us but plan a day trip to fish some then shop....makes the longer trip worthwhile....

Glenside is 20 minutes from Plymouth Meeting.
 
The others have it covered as far as I'm aware...sporting gentleman and TCO are comparable drives, from my area of the city at least. And unless you buy in bulk or find the occasional online deal, I think their prices are competitive with most places.

Who knows...gas may be more expensive than getting something shipped online, but I always enjoy browsing a shop's materials section.
 
Maybe during low volume traffic.
 
I do like the TCO and the prices are right. its probably my favorite fly shop in the area. I also do order stuff from online but I like to go and see the material to picture what I can do with it. I guess I buy to much stuff when im there.

thanks for the help. have to check out a few of the other shops I never been to.
 
I have to add that you can get some decent material buys from AC Moore or Michaels believe it or not... but no hooks :-(
 
There used to be a guy in Glenside, a retired school principal, who ran a shop out of his basement. If there's any chance he's still doing that you should try and find him in the yellow pages. He didn't keep up on his stock so much but he was a great guy and was great to talk to.

But yeah, nowhere really close or convenient. And no place has everything you need either especially when it comes to tying supplies. Sporting Gentleman and TCO are my top two spots. I would also sometimes hit French Creek Outfitters if I was out fishing Valley Creek.

I have yet to find a cheap hobby. I don't think your going to find a cheap shop especially down in your neck of the creek. I wish I had a fly shop within a half hours drive. Used to but since gone out. Good luck in your search for the cheap stuff. Let us all know when you find it. Good luck.
 
The guy someone mentioned from Elkins park, i am pretty sure he bought out the retired principal guy that someone else mentioned. If i am thinking of the right guy (in elkins park) i met him while fishing locally once and he told me of his shop that he had taken over from the gent in Glenside. My Dad bought materials from the Glenside guy previously as well, i grew up there
 
I order from taco, blue ribbon and great feathers. I know the guys I am dealing with and always get quality material.
