Any recommendations for favorite accommodations - particularly of the budget variety - in the Catskills? I usually go with a bunch of folks and get an Airbnb, but I have a window to pop down solo next weekend. I'm really not trying to spend $500 for a quick couple nights.

Suggestions for sketchy motels, condemned cabins, or tweaker-filled campgrounds are welcome. Feel free to PM if you don't want to blow up your favorite spot to get stabbed.

A friend and I stayed at Troutfitter in Deposit last week. It was the same deal, short notice, etc. and the room there was inexpensive, perfectly acceptable and clean. It wasn't fancy and the area isn't over the top beautiful, but it was fine for a couple of guys. Owner was helpful (we purchased a few items in the fly shop when we checked in) and seemed nice. I'm kind of hoping to go there next weekend myself, trying to talk my wife into a couple of nights at West Branch Angler, but we'll see.

Troutfitter in Deposit is very nice. Dave runs a great place, has a wonderful fly shop, and he is a wealth of information on the fishing everywhere in the system.

Upper Delaware Inn in Hancock is very nice too. Ask for the Fisherman's discount to save $30 a night. Room will be ~$105 a night. Walk to McDonalds if you like that!

Smith's Colonial is just outside of Hancock and offers clean rooms at fair prices.

All of these places offer a basic clean room with 1 or 2 beds, a mini fridge, microwave, TV and internet. Cant beat it for the price.

Troutfitter has both better beds and a better fly shop than WBA. Far as I can tell, WBA ain’t nothing but a money laundering operation.

They do have a lot of frontage on the river though, which is a benefit. I'm also not convinced that Troutfitter 's fly shop is nicer. The other issue for me is that WBA is pet friendly and that makes it easier to take my wife for a few days (we have a dog that really dislikes being away from us).

Have stayed at Troutfitter multiple times. Clean rooms. Reasonably priced. Dave is a good guy. Can walk right down the street and fish if you’d like. Only downside for me is lots of early morning truck traffic in Deposit. Noisy. Shared a two BR cabin at Dreamcatchers this year and recommend them. Very clean. Right on the river. Friendly people. Will go back. They have a big house you can rent. Probably sleeps 8-10.

Dear hooker-of-men,

If you own a vehicle like a truck with a cap or an SUV with fold down seats think about staying in a State Park like Oquaga Lake.

Yeah, you might not be able to shower and shave, but you'll have at least a pit toilet and access to potable water.

Regards,

Tim Murphy 🙂
