Anchorage in July

Heading to anchorage for a wedding in July, and I am trying to put together a two day trip while I am there. Any great suggestions on a good two day trip within a couple of hours from Anchorage? I know there are some runs on the Kenai during that time...but was really looking for something off the beaten path a bit. No preferences really on species (grayling, salmon, rainbows, etc.)...but would enjoy being able to camp or float the trip. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Check into a flyout with Rust Air. Lake Creek Lodge might be an option.

I've heard great things about Lake Creek Lodge too. With a short timeframe like that you may be able to "drop in" to a camp/lodge that generally caters to week-longers and negotiate a special rate. Of course, even though you're only taking one round trip you'll be paying your pilot to do two.

After talking to two guys who spent a month there two years ago, they said that you don't even have to leave the town to catch lot's of fish. You certainly don't have to go two hours.

ry, hilarious. My wife might object a bit (and so would the guests...imagining you in a dress), but then again...the idea of having a fishing buddy up there does hold some appeal.

2 day trip that time of year to me would mean red salmon fishing on the Russian river.

It is combat fishing but well worth it.

Also stop at any flowing body of water between anchorage and the Kenai and try your luck as you will find Dollies and the Pinks are absolutely sick!

You could also go to Ship creek right in anchorage for some king fishing...but that takes combat fishing to an all new level. I would recomend it just for the spectacle.

I would also recomend trying to float tube some of the larger lakes heading up towards Wasilla. The trout are eager and big.

Don't forget that at that time of year you can (and will) fish straight through the night so take advantage of it.

And since you are already there I would find it hard to pass up greyling.

In other words you need about 2 more weeks.

The in-town option is quite plausible. Ship Creek is a hot spot. It has a quirky salmon derby there.

It follows Whitney Rd. at the north end of town. I had an hour to kill "down by the tracks" in Anchortown once in late August while there were supposedly some silvers to be found but I didn't come up with any.
