Anyone been in spring lately? Planning to drive up from sw pa Saturday. Any info on water conditions is greatly appreciated. Would save a lot of time and gas money.
 
I'm sure the flows and conditions will be fine. Creeks around here have barely risen. They'll be coming up, no doubt, but we haven't had enough rain to mess Spring Creek up in any way. If anything, the rain and warming temperatures should help Spring fish better in my opinion.

Check the gauges, but I can tell you that as of 15 minutes ago Spring Creek at Axemann was below normal. It is pouring rain here around Harrisburg and everything locally is kind of turd brown and rising.

I fished spring creek yesterday.
It was still quite low before substantial rain moved in later in the afternoon and evening.
But it only rose a a few inches overnight, and still in good fishing shape now.

It usually has nice BWO hatches in early spring.
But that didn't happen yesterday - despite the cool rainy weather
Only saw a smattering of them for an hour or two in the afternoon.
Brought up a few very sporadic rises
Another forum member and I each caught a few and that was it.

Not sure why the fishing isn't better
Whether the long cold winter is still holding things back.
Maybe things still might pickup soon.....

My friend’s reports from Spring were that flows were really down.
 
Didn’t get to make the trip. Sorry, nothing to report. Had to make a trip to the car dealership instead. My wife’s 2014 Durango died. Planning to head up this coming Friday.

Fished it yesterday, water levels were good around mid 90cfs. It did have some color from the recent rain but fished pretty slow overall. We caught 10 total amongst a group of 5, most of them under 12 inches. One guy caught a really nice wild brown that was close to 18 inches or so. Zebra midges are what a majority of the fish were caught on. I've only been there a handful of times so still learning the water with each trip taken.
 
Was there Saturday, super slow. 1 12” brown on an 18 iron lotus. No dice on midge or micro egg. Always expect crowds on spring but it was more crowded than the weekend of peak grannoms so I made a switch to another stream in the afternoon and had better results.
 
Fish typically rise to them in the afternoon this time of year.
Although it was so warm on saturday, morning activity would not have been surprising
 
Thinking about checking out Spring Creek on Monday the 6th, as I've never been and am slowly trying to tick off the more well known waters within reasonable driving distance for me (coming from Maryland).

How do you all suspect it will fish given the coming heat? Low enough to get out there? If so, I'm a size snob so any recommendations on maybe the better stretches to have a chance at 15"+ would be appreciated. Also appreciate any recs on where I should consider other than Spring Creek? Have been to Penns and LJ but believe they'll be too warm..
 
Parts of Spring will definitely be too warm to ethically c&r after this heat wave. While they exist, if you research anything about Spring creek its not exactly known for large fish. Legitimate measured 15in wild fish are not abundant and are considered a really nice fish in any stream where they are caught.
 
You surely will drive over many great spots on your way....and with your brazen adventerous spirit id scope some of them out just knock on a few doors be polite state your intentions... just a tip 😉😉 but most water wilk be at the threshold of dont

My recommendation is to not bother with Spring Creek and stay in MD. Given the conditions, it's not worth the drive, although I don't think Spring would ever be worth the drive from MD.

Find something else to fish for. Yes, there will be cold water in PA during the upcoming heatwave, but those resources are limited. I'd recommend fishing for warm water fish..
 
I'm back in PA from Iowa for the past week/10 days, and I'm hitting the pause button on trout after yesterday: would be doing the same back home in the upper Midwest, since they are also being affected by this heatwave.

Spring days are passed us for this year. For trout, give them a break til days shorten in late August/September & the fall cold fronts start up; or fish for bass, pickerel, panfish. If you must scratch the trout itch during the height of the summer heat, find the highest altitude bottom release tailwater or spring fed creek you can, fish it from morning twilight to no later than 9am. My $0.02.
