Crazy Technology

I'm coming out with my own version that lies about the size of your catch. It's called...

Bull$#!+ Ball

It will be available in different + measurements such as +2", + 3", +4", etc. So your 11" fish can be 17" if you use a +6" Bull$#!+ Ball...

"But wait, order a +4" and a +6" Bull$#!+ Ball and get a +3" ball at no charge (just pay shipping and handling)."

"Due to supply chain issues, this may be you last opportunity to order Bull$#!+ Ball so order yours TODAY!!

B-B-B-Bull $#!+"

Years ago I made a table of estimated fish weights, based on length and girth. I printed it about 3”x 5”, laminated several of them and carried one with me when I went fishing.

Here’s one that’s not laminated. (Front and back of the card.)

I carried it with me for about a season and don’t think I ever used it. I much preferred to spend my time fishing, not worrying about taking pictures, measuring fish, a figuring out how much fish weighed.

Like my fish weight table, I suspect that ball will be more of a foul ball than a home run hit.

Dear Wild_Trouter,

I don't think I own one single fishing rod out of many dozens that doesn't have at least one readily identifiable measuring mark already on it. Some actually have thread wraps at 15" or 20" on them. I never thought they were more than decorative trim wraps until I put a tape to them. 😉

But there are even easier ways. For example, a typical cigar grip on a fly rod is 6" long. Add 3" for the reel seat and you should be able to hold the fish against the rod and come pretty damn close.

YMMV, though I will admit Bam's BSBalls look interesting! 😉

Regards,

Tim Murphy 🙂

I see guys on youtube using them. Seems kinda silly to me, but I don’t really care exactly how big a fish is. My measuring system is as follows:
dink
average (9-11 ish)
good (12-16 ish)
big (17 -19 ish)
holy **** (20+)

I have had a small tape measure in my vest for 3 or 4 years now but I don’t think ive ever used it.

We talked about this earlier in the year my guide buddy lost 3 in the river this year he's done with them, but still he will sell you one LOL

I've mentioned this before. I have lines marked on my rods at 12, 15. 18 and 20". So easy to just hold a fish up to the rod and see how long it actually

is. In the pic you can see two of them on my rod.

I have a 3' key-ring sized Stanley tape measure hanging from a zipper on my main gear bag that stays in the back of my SUV.

I own a lot of rods and couldn't be bothered or want to mark them. When I cared about such things, I'd just measure a large fish against the rod using something on the rod blank as a marker; winding check, hook keeper, manufacturer's logo, rod builders script, etc.

After returning to the car, I'd use the little tape measure against that mark to figure out the actual length.

Then after I safely stash my gear, I'll add an inch or two for every beer consumed in celebration.. 🙂

$36 to prove I exaggerate the size of my fish? Hard pass.

Got this as a birthday present from my wife. You get two balls for the $36 and the app is free to use. Personally, I enjoy it as its fun to show my 6th graders the good uses of AI.

Tight lines y'all!

Have seen them in use. Seem to be quite accurate.
