Advice needed loosing fish

A net with a nice soft rubber bag is the best thing you can do for a trout’s health. You’re far more likely to stress a fish by grabbing it quickly or lifting it out of the water on the tippet than you are just landing it while keeping it in the water then removing the hook. If you only fish for dinks then it’s probably ok, but if you’re after wild browns on creeks like Penns you’re gonna find yourself out over your skis pretty fast especially fishing something like the cicadas.
With warmer water temps this week, the fight will be over faster too.

Cliff notes: just use a net, it’s better for the fish than the Joe Humphreys gill fingering bulls**t.

the Ketchum release actually works as well. I';d get one but I'd probably lose it.

That looks like it might be good for the fish. I would
Like to see it used in some real fish landing situations. In my case I still had him probably a yardstick away so I probably should have just fought him a little longer. In my younger days I would have waded aggressively through the fast water. I really needed two pulls on the line to get him close enough. That
Obviously didn’t work. The other hand was holding the rod so a second pull was difficult to do quickly.
I have certainly toyed with the idea of a net but I the cost
Benefit analysis has me paralyzed. So the big question is does he count? If so then I am good without a net!

The cost was not in money but in lugging it around and getting it caught in brush.

I like what LycoFlyFisher says especially the side pressure. If you happen to hook a fish below you, you need to transition to side pressure (pulling the trout toward your bank). The trout will most likely will be hooked on the in the mouth. Don’t rush it in. The trout will go crazy then it slows down. It’s easier to bring in.

A fish hooked downstream is tough to land. They typically have an open mouth with very little secondary flesh to re-attach to if the original hookset breaks free.

I personally do not transition to my fly reel to fight the fish. I strip every fish back to me. To me, the reel is just a fly line holder.

Stop caring if you lose fish. Seriously, best advice ever given to help me. Advanced tactic here. Laugh and tell the fish you don’t want him getting your net slimy or any photos of him. Fish never cooperate. He will be practically jumping in your net for a photo.

Relax, enjoy the fight, think positive. Keep a bend in the rod at all times and good things will happen.
Fighting fish is somewhat luck and percentage based. It’s possible you are just in a rut of bad luck and about to go on a streak of landing a high percentage of fish.
Unless you are fishing for little brook trout. Then prepare to continue to lose lots of fish as has been previously stated.

It’s a numbers game. Keep at it! Hook more, land more. Keeping tension and preventing slack in your line will help in the landing department.
