The Cicadas are Coming…2025

I remember when the last brood hit Maryland they seemed to be in large groupings that would take over a large section of woods and then a 1/4 mile away nothing.

That was my experience in Lancaster/Dauphin at the beginning of the emergence in 2021. It would be deafening in one spot and very little distance away, nothing.

We were out west for the peak that year. When I got back near the end of the cycle, they seemed more widespread.

I saw a lot of cicadas today. Didn't hear any buzzing at all. But it's going to get noisy soon.

Yes hard to see, but the field was just packed with cicadas. There are 20-25 just in that shot. I went looking around Union county a little and didn't see any. Of course they are here, but just not everywhere. In trying to figure out why all those cicada are on those (is it winter wheat? I didn't try to ID) plants and not just on tree bark ... but everyone knows they will climb and emerge on just about anything. Did they maybe come from the ground from trees along the field border?
Regardless, it's cool to see.

There was a small line of trees and then the field. It was a fallow field and I have never seen any crops there in the seven years I have been parking in that spot. I think they were emerging out of the field.

I was driving yesterday afternoon in Union county and saw hundreds (maybe more, hard to count at 45 MPH) of cicadas along the road in a similar manner in the tall grasses. They were next to a tree line and then the stream.

Just saw the weather forecast and starting Wednesday we'll see hot temperatures for a number of days. I expect that will cause the cicadas to really pop.

I was out on 3 central PA streams yesterday that should see cicada, BFC, Spring, and Little J. I didn't see or hear any bugs. Hoping the warmer temps this week finally get this rolling...

Here's my first cicada eater.

I had a couple others refuse.

I only saw cicadas on about a quarter of over a mile of bank walked. They're not making any noise yet and not flying much.

I managed another outside of Reedsville on the way home. They were making noise this time but there weren't many on streamside vegetation.

You’re looking at another week or two before lotsa action. Way too cold. It’s not the emergence that’s important but weeks following when they emerge then swarm. They love heat, usually not a morning thing.

There is no driving to XYZ creek and going fishing. The way to be successful is you drive around the general area and you listen and you look and that’s how you find them, observation you just don’t show up.

Fished in 2008 and if you use what I learned you should be successful.

Was talking to Dennis at FFP about this just days before he passed away. We were saying how we were gonna fish it again the second time and we knew more about the hatch and then I asked him who do you think or know that may have fixed this three times- Joe H was the answer. Maybe 4 times, good living.

I was around for the 91 emergence
But didn't find out about it until they were pretty much over
No internet then
Had to find things out word of mouth.

I happened to be in FFP in late June.
And overheard Steve talking to another customer about it
Heard him saying how when the fish hit them, there were body parts flying overwhere

I bought the stuff, and went home to tie some up
But by the time I got back up - it was done

Fished 2008 hatch in central PA
The one in western PA about 6 years ago
Then the 2021 emergence in south central PA

Likewise. I'm considering a run up M-W, but may be a bit early. I look at it this way, if they're not on cicadas then, it's fishing in the State College region with great flows and lots of other bugs!

Are cicadas pretty widely distributed in Clearfield County, including the mountain stream areas? Are or they found more in residential areas, farming areas etc.?

I had a theory that cicadas were found in fertile soils areas, and not where the soils were infertile. But my theory could be wrong.

Is Clearfield Creek fairly will cleaned up these days all the way to its mouth? I know a guy that lives on it, and he's seeing smallmouth bass what whatnot in it, but I don't know where exactly he is on the stream.

Yes, smallies the whole way. There is one stream that runs along 322 that could still use some work, but they’ve done a really good job cleaning up the rest.

In my experience it is good to really slap the fly on the water with a good thud.
