How do you fish this sinking fly for SMB? Do you strip it or dead drift it? Just curious. It looks like a sure winner. Where is your local creek? I'm looking for water smaller than the Juniata River to wade for smallmouths. I'm 71 and wading is a little more difficult.

I generally drift it, I let it swing out straight and dangle a bit before slowly stripping it back in. Sometimes I just let it sit there after the swing and do nothing until I can’t stand it any more. I’ll then do one slow strip and let it sit there again until I can’t take it any more. My local creek (SE PA) is very rocky making wading somewhat difficult. In fact, when I went out on Saturday morning I forgot my wading staff which I always take. I made one cast, tripped and fell in the water, cutting my left hand on the rocks in 3 places. I went to the bank and grabbed a stick to use for the rest of the outing.
Thanks. Those wading staffs really help. I've been using one for 40 years. I've fallen while using mine a few times, too.
That's one ugly bug!! The hackle looks like partridge...but what's that "yellow stuff" and what's the tail?
It’s got a partridge hackle, PT tail and body with some gold wire ribbing, thorax is some gold stone hare that I spun in.
Appropriately named. Beautiful tie, as always.

foam was no bueno. it tore around the bend as i feared it might and it could have been the shape, but it twisted the heck out of the leader. the ones i cut from the thin leather seemed fine.
