The "User Requested Ties" forum is setup as a resource for users to ask for a specific pattern and get some ideas on how to tie that pattern. We do a pretty good job in the Hatch and Entomology Forum to stay focused on the topic and hope that we can do that here in this forum. There are plenty of places all around the site for rambling stories and thread derailments. This is not one of those forums it is a resource for fly tying patterns and approaches by a requested user.

  • Do not post unrequested patterns. We have What Are You Tying Today and the General Fly Tying Forum for those kinds of threads.
  • Keep to the pattern requested
  • A good reply would offer materials, directions and picture for a recipe and help if you can
  • No link farming (no linking to another site for a recipe or pattern)
  • I hope to see this be a place for recipes/ideas for patterns or pictures in the posts
  • Titles may be modified by the moderators

Thanks to @SlingingWets the idea and Mods crafting a way to bring this together.

Enjoy.

I'm curious about the prohibition on linking to outside sources. Is the idea to encourage posters to contribute their own original photos / input in response to a pattern request?

So, for example, a thread like the recent parachute post discussion (not a specific pattern, I know) would instead, here, focus on user-generated content about a given pattern rather than a catalog of YouTube links?

The talent and knowledge on this site is pretty amazing. We have thousands of new fly fishing anglers here since the update to the site a few years ago and many are newer to the sport. We may not have a lot of Professional Tyers, but we have a helluva of top tier folks who are just as good, if not better.

I think most people can go Google a pattern if they want something from the Interwebs. I would encourage that we create and share patterns here as a resource. In What Are You Tying Today threads most poster already share their materials. If they are asking for a pattern on Paflyfish I would think they would like to understand how members here tie their XXX fly.

Certainly a discussion on methods and materials would be a great fit to the conversation in a thread once started. Not everyone ties a XXX fly the same way and reading the different methods is enlightening for most everyone, not just beginners.
