I decided to make an afternoon trip to “The Slip” yesterday. I had been wanting to try out my dad’s old Shakespeare 1458 Wonderod, 7’ model FBK. It has a recommended 7 or 8 weight line and I decided to try a 7.
Fished 130-530 at the very lower end of the gorge. Water was clear to slightly milky and in the low 60s. USGS streamflow discharge was less than 60.
I was pleasantly surprised at the casting ability of the rod and line, and had several follows and swirls on red and white clousers. No hookups. I switched to an ultralight spinning reel with a Rebel Crawdad and fished back to the truck. I picked up several short smallies and a fall fish, all 4-9” in length. All fighters! By this time the creek was much more shaded than when I fished up and may have also contributed to my success.
It’s a very challenging stream section to wade, and I’m glad I had a wading staff. My back and hips were really aching last night. Still, a beautiful afternoon on a beautiful section of stream that I had always wanted to fish. Using Dads old rod added the finishing touch to the experience.
