Polarized Fit Overs

Steve98:

When I fish, especially on a wooded stream there at least 20 times a day when I can see certain things better with or without sunglasses. In those situations, flip-ups rule...

Do yourself a favor and check out the Cocoons Polarized Flip-Ups...

I use Cocoons Polarized Flip-Ups as my sunglasses pretty much exclusively. Among other things, they come in 6 different tints. For fishing I prefer the amber or copper tinted lenses. BTW - The smaller square or rectangle versions fit in the Clip-Ons Case.

And speaking of clip-ons, Cocoons clip-ons are another option of you don't think you want flip-ups. I'll also add Cocoons customer service is excellent!!
I've used cocoons for years they hold up well and have lasted the two years between new frame/prescription very well.

Like others have said Cocoons fog up and get too warm. I prefer clip-on flip ups

Thx dryfly. Yeah, I have the progressive lenses. You bring up a good point. Getting standard bifocals for fishing seem like a better option. I'm either looking closer up or at distance. Almost never mid-range
Thanks for this. I also have progressives but for fishing standard bifocals with the larger close vision area would make more sense. 👍

Dear CRB,

Like I said I bought Havens because I couldn't find Cocoons to try on. I'm happy with them, they only weigh about 2 or 3 ounces, and I have no problem with fogging. I even have a pair of $ 9.99 Flying Fisherman fit overs that I bought 15 years ago that I still use that work fine.

I've had prescription sunglasses for many years but when I got my new prescription I was looking @ $ 500.00 for a pair with lightweight plastic polarized progressive lenses. At that price I'll squint into the water!

Regards,

Tim Murphy 🙂

Tim,
I’m not sure they still do this, but years ago, Sam’s club was a great place for this. I haven’t gone to get sunglasses made there in about ten years. But I used to get all kinds of fishing glasses made there. Not only is their frames and lenses reasonably priced. They make and sell just lenses! Any lenses of any material with any add ons. The choices were crazy. Any color lense you could think of!

They have a frametracer machine. This means you can get a pair of 9.99 fishing glasses or a pair of safety glasses from another store and bring it in to their optical department and get prescription or even just sunglasses lenses made to fit in the frame. Used to take about 5 business days to get them sent to the store. Then the Sam’s club optical employee will switch out the old lenses for the new prescription ones when you come in to pick them up. Not sure how much it would cost these days. But it used to be dirt cheap compared to glasses or lenses making anywhere else.

Dear 5footfenwick,

Maybe some day I'll check out alternative sources for glasses. All I know is when I was quoted for a pair of sunglasses I nearly died. Four years ago, I bought prescription everyday glasses I also got polarized sunglasses and the bill with the eye exam was right around $ 450.00 for everything.

Last May I got new glasses and they were $ 500.00 themselves. The frames were $ 149.00 because I have a bucket head, and the lenses were $ 700.00 but insurance paid for half of the lenses. Because I'm diabetic and needed a "special" eye exam I had to pay for that out of pocket for another $ 150.00. I wasn't spending $ 1200.00 plus to have sunglasses too so I cheaped out. 😉

When I retire, I hope I can get Laser vision correction like my wife did. She was blind as a bat and got 20/20 for nothing from Medicare.

Regards,

Tim Murphy 🙂

Cocoons fit-overs, clip-ons or flip-ups?

For those unaware, Cocoons doesn't just offer fit-overs...
I've used the fit overs in early 2000-2012 than the clip ons. Recently got a pair of smith's when i had extra $ in my health savings account at the end of the year. I've found that I do like the smiths and the fitovers because of the side shields. I don't have a problem with fogging unless I get into a warm car in the winter.
Even my safety glasses at work seldom fog. hum...
