I'm curious about what folks tie for October Caddis. I have a Penns trip coming up in a few weeks. My trip last year had a warm stretch where was only the first day or two where they were coming off. Hoping for better weather this year and a bit of variety on bugs the throw.

Orange Stimulator works well. But I always liked to tie this layered version because I could use it when the stoneflies were popping too.

A friend tied a dozen of this exact look for me about 20 years ago and it has been very effective for me. He also tied a another dozen with a more yellow bottom and it has been a killer pattern for me on The Lehigh. Curious: do you have an emerger and nymph October Caddis pattern that you can shae/recommend?

I never had much luck with the dries since they mostly hatch at night I think. I'm also in the camp that they like emergers better.

Have done great with the larvae though. My old pattern was super simple: cream synthetic yarn (one that gets translucent when wet) on a 10 scud hook with a brown head. Prior to the hatch the larvae start moving and the trout enjoy those huge meals.

When do they usually start on Penn’s? There was a thread last year with some good patterns. I tied a few up for last fall and saw only 1 adult on Penn’s. I also tied some wets but had no luck on them.

Good tie but this illustrates why I like the layered ones better, and maybe why the emerger patterns allegedly work better is when I have encountered them, they didn't seem to flutter about as much as smaller caddis. Perhaps the lower profile is more attractive.
