My vote would be neither but if you really want to do one or the other salmon river.

I'd go Niagara river as a first choice. 2nd option would be to drive east along nys rt 18 and stop and look at every creek to see if you can see fish. If you see them, then fish. If you take it all the way to rochester and dont see anything, then continue on rt 104 east when rt 18 terminates.

You will cross literally every Ontario trib on these roads.

Salmon runs have been poor on western end if Ontario I'm guessing they will be late runs because by all accounts fishing in the lake was good this summer.

Niagara River is intimidating but much more rewarding and less crowded than other options.

Yes that's it.

So finally found a minute to report back. We checked out the archers club and is a very nice setup for how things seem to be up that way. We mostly walked up steam into the faster water but seems from what everyone was saying is the water was up. I felt the water level was good but dirty. Unfortunately did not have luck here . The next day we tried Burt dam. Water was still up and dirty but managed one brown in the pic below.

So may take away from this area is that it felt limited on access. If we had a bit more time we would have checked the few other streams in the area out. Perhaps these other streams would change my thinking on this. Maybe I'm just use to Erie where we have a handful of good streams all within reach fairly easily and lots of water to walk. All in all it was a good experience and chatted with a lot of nice people and can say id give it another chance just to see what the ideal conditions are like .

At least you caught one! I had several hookups last time I was up but the boredom and the amount of people does strike up some good conversations (as long as they are speaking English seems to be so many Russians). I've met a lot of nice people and a ton from PA while up on the Oak. There are a few other streams up that way and I was going to explore one or two of them this last time I was up but things were too blown out. With Oak being controlled by the dam it was still fishable.

There are more in that area that can be great. Some take 3 to 4 days to clear and get fishable. Others only 2 or 3. Many memorable days on smaller water. GG
