Hey y'all, like the title says, I'm pretty new to PA and Chester County, got here last August. I've fished since I was a kid (born 1972) growing up in British Columbia, but I only started fly fishing while in school at the University of Oregon, my brother pretty much taught me what he knows and I've never had any classes or anything, so my knowledge of the sport is still pretty limited. I lived in Eugene in central Oregon from 2000 to 2006, then in Southern Oregon from 2006 to 2011. Once I started flyfishing I couldn't stop. Ever chance I got I was out at either the Willamette River or (more often) the McKenzie River about 20 min from Eugene. I say my knowledge is limited because my brother taught me the basics, then I basically hunted up and down the rivers til I found a few spots where I could consistently catch trout and steelhead using the same techniques over and over. Most of the fish I caught were either on prince nymphs, caddis, green drakes, pheasant tails. I never rotated flies that much because I could catch fish in the same areas all year long using just these flies.
Then moved to Florida in 2011 and gave it up (I'm not too big on sitting next to a huge body of water and casting into it, I'd much rather be wading up and down the river looking for faster water with pools, eddies, and seams).
Picked up right back up as soon as I moved here.Went out a bunch scouting spots and trying my luck, got nothing until Feb or so. Now I'm starting to find some real nice spots and learning all the areas around here, which has been cool. I usually go out twice a week and there's only been a couple of days where I've hooked zilch. There's definitely a learning curve here though. I'm using a bigger array of different nymphs, haven't started on dries yet. Wooly buggers seem to work nicely here, better than in Oregon. I was looking forward to opening day to fish the stocked waters but that's been a learning curve as well. I couldn't believe how busy it was opening day! But I quickly found out that all the plunkers seem to huddle around the same slow water, the deep pools with overhanging rocks where you don't need waders and you're picking off the freshly-stocked trout that seem to die off quick. I try and park somewhere quieter and wade up and down through the faster water, I might only pull 1 or 2 trout out in a few hours but they're typically nice-sized and put up a nice fight.
Anyways, I've been meaning to introduce myself for awhile, and I've learned alot just from looking at y'alls posts so far. I respect the fact that people on here don't seem to post alot of specific spots, I'm finding my own productive ones and that's been rewarding 🙂
