I'm not trying to be a prick, but...

Since when do stocked fish have orange bellies with black speckling, perfect reds fins with a white leading edge and black stripe, and that nise dark olive color? Especially for only being in the water for a month? I've caught brookies that have been in the water for 9 months that don't look like that.

If those are 4" tiles, that puts the fish at about 10-12." and if they are 6" tiles that's about 12-14." Both of which are completely attainable for a PA brookie. Especially this early in the year when fish migrate a ton. Fish still swim right?

I don't care if it is wild and he killed it, and I'm sure he's a perfectly wonderful fellow.I'm just saying when I look at that fish I don't think freshly stocked, even from a private hatchery.

The argument thatthey can survive certain streams I don't buy either. I've wild browns and brookies in the middle of July in streams that have temps close to 80 for weeks prior.

It looks like a lot of stocked brookies around here. I guess its possible it could have held over, but for the same reason that I don;t think that is likely I don't think its wild. The stream very urban and very warm...very warm. The only possible way for it to survive is if it went out to the river in summer and found some spring to hang out over. Or took a left turn and went up the Allegheny. It always possible but it is extremely unlikely.

or maybe they are 3 inch tiles...or maybe they are not tiles at all but a pattern in a vinyl floor (which it is)...my bathroom floor is vinyl and they squares are 2 inches. I think we've shown it to be completely unreliable to judge a fishes size by what is in the background of photos. We've never come to a single consensus on this board when trying to judge size that way.

BTW here is the streams location...which doesn't mean the fish can't be wild. I am still not even all that impressed by its appearance. Sorry, apparently our opinions differ.

Just for the sake of conversation...

Montour run gets to be 80 + degrees in the summer. I have wet waded there in October and it was 70.

Think of all the parking lots at Robinson Mall (Kmart on the other hill) and big box stores across the highway- plus the blacktop roads and highways that drain into there.

My question to Maurice or anyone else????

How hot does that water get on summer afternoon during a thunderstorm draining all of those super hot asphalt surfaces?

Sorry about starting this thread. I didn't want this to turn into an argument or anything. I was just wondering what the thoughts were on where this fish came from, stocked, holdover etc....

Anyway like i said Ifish this stream all the time because its extremely close and i know it well and what makes it interesting is this fish was caught in a very deep pool which is over 10ft deep. Maybe this would have allowedf for holdover but i would think there would be less oxygen down there when the water warmed. Who knows... but still enjoyed catching it. Also i did measure it with a ruler (didn't get a pic) but it was 14 inches 15 maybe if i pinched the tail down like the PFBC says to do. Put and take stream and family wanted fish for dinner so i figured oh well i'll keep it.

If you hadn't kept it it probably would have died before the end of the summer.

yeah no worries... the more you're on this board, the more "debating" you'll do.

I believe Mike from the commish made a post atleast a few weeks ago saying that they've been messing with the trout this year to make them more colorful. so another log to throw on the fire.

Depending on where in the Pittsburgh area you're from, try fishing Pine Creek, upstream from North Park. There's a DHALO section thats ok. Also Bull creek and Deer creek are in that area.

Up north, like I said before, is Slippery Rock (FFO), Neshannock (DHALO) and Shenango River (ATW, but gets stocked A LOT!).

Check out the link on the left hand of every page "PA Trout Streams". It was just made about 2 months ago and is fantastic for finding Special Regulation streams all across the state. PM me if you ever want someone to fish with, be more than happy to.

I am actually moving to Ross twp. in a couple months. House will be about 10 minutes from north park so i'm looking forward to that. Bass fishing is pretty rough sometimes in the south hills and i think north park is part of the bass program. I have been to mconells mill and volant before but unfortunately never for fishing. I think once I get some more confidence up in my fly fishing i'll head to some new water but for now i'm more relaxed practicing in familiar places.

I asked this before but the clarion along the edge of cooks forest, how does that fish if anyone knows? If its a secret then thats ok.
