Lower Middle Creek Natives

I was at my mom's house yesterday down from the lake. The water looked putrid. I doubt the lake has much impact that far down. I would have loved to see upper Middle before the lake. Yes lower Middle is heavily farmed but it sure seems to be deep, fast, and a decent amount of trees. Virtually no eroded banks as large rocks line it everywhere.
 
The only places I see stream restoration necessary is from Rock Road to Burkholder Road Spring. More trees from Clay Road to Rock Road would be nice. The stretch to the Middle Creek Bridge isn't great with some erosion but lots of good holes and few shallow areas. A bad stretch up farther is Mt.Airy Road to 322. But that's before Segloch. I did fish Clay Road up to lower Segloch. The new 322 bridge sucks. We used to do stream work on the Landis Farm. It has grown up nicely. I did well on the stretch just up to the Landis Farm. No brookies but lots of browns.Maybe they are coming from the Segloch. The browns I caught did look nearly identical to then MC ones.

All i can do is guess but by looking at as ive driven past, if my memory serves correct somewhere around 20-30ft?
 
Sorry I didn't have a good pick of the Segloch Trout. I tried to erase the post. 20-30 feet sounds about right.
 
JeffP talk about good timing. I've been almost exclusively fishing the section of MC below Lincoln. I have done pretty well nymphing but once those sulphs start hatching the fish have really been focused on them. I have been trying to figure out other access outside of the obvious pull off at Lincoln. I plan to continue to fish this through the summer while keeping an eye on the temps. I had no idea there were several springs that dump into MC. Maybe some time we will run into one another.


Also any chance you have fished the section of Hammer Creek at Lincoln/Carpenter Rd? It seems like it its a ton of pressure early in the season.
 
Hi Nomad Archer! I believe they stocked a lot right at Lincoln. I was there a couple times with my son and missed a few. It's been pounded and I have been more upstream along MC Road. The last time out I did see a lot of rises right before dark upstream of Lincoln Road. Nobody fished there but there are fish there. Unfortunately I haven't been out for a while and fear I misses the heaviest of the sulfurs. I definitely plan on getting out soon. Glad you are enjoying some fly-fishing on MC. I really see few fly-fishers on the Creek. Haven't fished those to spots on the Hammer since opening day. I didn't catch anything but have seen decent bugs at Lincoln Road but no rises when I stopped twice so I just continued on to MC. Hopefully I will bump into you sometime. I'll look for the 1 guy fly fishing!
 
I know there are a couple places downstream of Lincoln where I have seen a car or to pulled off. I am not sure if they stocked through the meadow or not but enough cars there that I think they did. The bridge on MC Road had a bunch in but I didn't catch anything the next 2 times. I have seen few cars down there.
 
Lincoln was definitely well stocked. It has gotten pounded but the fish have been very receptive to nymphing. The last few times out the hatch has started around 730-8. It wasn't anything heavy but the subsurface action totally shut down. I've never focused on fishing dries but I need to learn if I want to catch anything later in the evening. I have seen people fishing below lincoln as well. I do agree there had to be fish stocked in there with the amount of pressure it's received. I'll probably be out this evening with the rain. I might have to try a different spot for a change of scenery.
 
Well the rain didn't come and MC is in my opinion extremely low and clear. I managed a few at Lincoln and a nice brown at rock rd. There were two other anglers I ran into one at Lincoln and one at Lime Rock Rd where I just drove by and didn't stop. I wish I would have had my thermometer to take some stream temps at this point its time to start paying attention to that.
 
Were you in a Red Truck? I started at Lincoln and I think you were upstream and I didn't want to crowd anyone. I went to Limerock and fished down into that area where I caught some of the natives. I finished upstream of Lincoln above the farm with the lighthouse where I missed a nice one the night before. There were a lot of bugs but few fish rising. Did you fish dries? See bugs? Were you at the bridge at Rock Road? As far as temps go, I will start to take some. I know I have had some good mornings in the past as late as the 2nd week in June.

I was mainly fishing nymphs as I do that much better than dries. I am slowly forcing myself to occasionally fish dries or dry dropper rigs. But there is a lot of work there to get my leader worked out so I can still make an reasonable cast with a euro leader. I did fish dries above the bridge for a little bit but my poor casting (trying to force it with an ultra light euro leader) spooked more fish than I got a look from.

At Lincoln, I flipped over a few rocks out of curiosity and found a few sulphur or march brown nymphs (I struggle differentiating the two) and I was surprised to find several large size 12-14 scuds. As for the hatches seem to be a lot of caddis, midges with an occasional sulphur but hardly any fish rising.

Do you know if its possible to fish upstream of the rock road or lime rock road bridge. Both seem to have the single fence wire across the stream. I'm not sure what the purpose of that wire is but I certainly dont want to go where I shouldn't be. The water above both rock rd bridge and lime rock bridge looks good from the road.
 
I have fished upstream of Limerock Road. That Meadow certainly is not posted. Caught first native there. There are a bunch of Amish kids there that fish. They have a worm stand and it says good luck. Follow it up to where it goes near the road with a nice little spring. Upstream of there I have caught native. No sign of posting. There is some nice interesting water upstream of Wissler Road that they call the twin bridges. Upstream of there is where that really nice spring creek dumps in on Burkholder Road. Upstream of Rock Road just hasn't seemed super trouty to me but I believe they often float stock that section up to Clay Road. Next time I see you, I will stop and say hi.
The only posted sign is one right next to the road downstream from Lime Rock. There is super nice water there. The sign seems old and I fished down into it by mistake. Caught a native and missed some nice ones in that section. The sign doesn't seem to start or end anywhere and there are no signs along the creek either way. Downstream(above where you were) is well-maintained and it would be so easy to put up a couple signs. I will admit that its odd nobody fishes there but I don't think they stock there.
