Took this picture in Potter county on the First Fork of the Sinnemahoning in late May. Around 9pm they began to show up all around the outside lights, lots of them. This one was nearly 2" long. What is it?

Dear Paul,

Green Drake spinner, aka Coffin fly.

Regards,

Tim Murphy :)

As Tim has said, this is the
Ephemera guttulata (scientific name)
Eastern Green Drake Mayfly Spinner.

You can find a ton of information about this on the internet.

Green Drakes are very common in that region, i.e. First Fork, East Fork, Kettle, Pine, Cross Fork, etc.

Including in many small brookie streams.

Thanks fellas, I guess I have never seen one up close, I've only seen them flying. I was actually using coffin flies that day (and many other days). I typically don't care what it's called I just try to match what's flying around, but recently I've been taking more interest in the bugs I'm trying to mimic.

I typically don't tie my own dries (only nymphs) but I want to start. I think that will help me learn more about them.
