I caught this emerging mayfly coming of the water yesterday while fishing a Central PA stream. Seemed a bit early to me to see a gray fox mayfly.
Here is a photo of one of the ones I did not crush grabbing. Took yesterday 5/4. Carbon CountyThe Gray Fox / March Brown (Maccaffertium vicarium) can vary from stream to stream based on weather like a lot of flies. Some streams have more March Browns, some more Gray Fox. Some people would say the Gray Fox comes out a little later than March Browns, but I have heard everything and it's all over the map.
I was taking pictures of Maccaffertium vicarium on Kettle Creek on April 27, 2010, which was a very very cold day. I have been seeing Maccaffertium vicarium here in Central Pennsylvania too.
Nice picture BTW. Phone I assume?

Ive decided they are both a parachute hares ear.....one is size 12 and one 10.The entomologists have decided that March Browns and Grey Foxes are the same species.
