Does Cigarette Smoking Affect Catching Fish

Just reminder for the cigarette smokers fishing out there, including myself: if you could break off the filter and keep them in your pack/vest pocket and properly dispose of later, it would be most appreicated. Makes that pocket smell like s%&t but better than being in the water. Thanks.
I couldn't agree more! I put my cigarette filters in a plastic film container and dispose of them later.

No for trout in moving water... I've witnessed them eat cig butts for crying out loud.

+1

Have seen them hit cigarette butts over and over again.

And I do not smoke.

Cigars bio-degrade
cheap ones while you smoke them.

I met some guides in Alaska that wear rubber gloves when bait fishing for kings. They claimed that just as a salmon can smell it's native stream it can pick up odors that are foreign. Maybe the trout aren't that smart? Maybe fly flotant is an attractor? GG

I don't think smoking bothers the fish at all. Before I became a sanctimonious former smoker many years ago at my then new wife's urging, I smoked regularly when fishing. I wasn't a very good fly fisherman, but it wasn't because of the cigarettes or cigars I smoked on the creek. So, smokers, go to it, though I don't know how you afford six bucks a pack. When I quit, they had just risen to fifty cents. Of course, you could get a draft at many bars for 15 or 20 cents then. Heck, I could tie on a relatively good one for less than two bucks.

WHY Would a trout give a flying intercourse with all the other odors?
Well, maybe on Valley creek where they know the guys by name.
How well I remember the ten and twenty five cent drafts.Good old days.
Night out for five dollars, buy a gal last round.
Now the drinks are $10

What that all about? Waxing nostalgic my friend.
One better 10 cent drafts all day, and not those 8 ozers. Or Paul Jones and a draft in Braddock, .25 before and after each shift the mill.
I remember whe I moved her you could get absolutely null and void for $2 on 4th st . in St. Pete. When it was the end of the month ,I got paid once/ mo. back then, a 6er of Orbit was a buck. Peter, your old , but not as old as me. Your buddy Art aka GG

And girls were girls and men were men-

Wow, you old farts! And I actually thought I was the old one here!

Pete and Art, our bravest resident old farts. I can still get a $0.50 draft on Tuesday between 6-8 PM and Friday 10-Midnight. But I pass and have $1.50 shots of borbon and $1 bottles of Miller High Life (again).

As noted earlier, I am buying into this as the reason all my non-smoking buddies catch more than me--- but, fudge it, I like to smoke. It's a family tradition.

As for the price of cigs: it is obscene how we let the tobacco companies prey on our weaknesses. Shame on them; shame on us.

PA $1.60 / pack & Uncle Sam $1.01 / pack + some local gov't / cities add to that. Actually, I guess it a good thing. The price of smokes has caused many to quit. How much is too much.

Interesting topic. The folowing is an excerpt and the link to it.

Even though fish are attracted to certain odors, they are also repelled by others. Savvy anglers wash their hands thoroughly before tying lines or baiting hooks. For whatever reason, it is commonly believed that washing one's hands with lemon Joy, biodegradable soaps and herring oil is an effective way to remove offensive odors. Some go to the extreme by wearing surgical gloves when tending to baits and lines.
So, what are the worst and best odors?
Gasoline, oil, bug repellents and sun tan lotions rank at the top of the list of odors that turn fish off. Fried foods, especially chicken and potato chips, along with scents of peppers, onions and nicotine are also high on the bad list. The best scents vary, depending on the species you are targeting.
If you are trout or salmon fishing, baits scented with the smell of salmon eggs are a safe bet. Bass fishermen like to use spray attractants laced with the smell of shad, herring and earthworms, while cat fishermen prefer garlic and the smell of shrimp

You non-smokers and your non-scented flies think you are special catching all those fish. Harrumph!

Come on.Fade doesn't smoke and he never catches any fish.

Because he's too busy posting epic threads about how great the streams he likes to fish are, and everyone else is stinging them first. 🙂

I’m convinced that fish “smells” the tobacco scent from your fingers and also your ability to see diminutive and delicate hatch and conditions might be affected.

I actually make sure my flies smell, I just don't want them smelling like smoke.

Unless you make your flies smell like the insect or baitfish its supposed to imitate, what do you accomplish trying to keep them from smelling like tobacco, humans, dogs, cats, mountain lions, pizza, hot dogs,Sas's,chicken wings, beer[filtered or unfiltered,horses,cows,sheep,etc..?
Me thinkest we kid ourselves that we are smarter than pea brain.
