I'm a big fan of nice sporting art, especially original oil paintings. I have a few favorite artists and I do have a fair number of original paintings in my home, but not a ton of fly fishing art. I've got it in my head that one of these days I wouldn't mind commissioning an artist to do a painting of me fly fishing in one of several rivers that are special to me in one way or another. I want the location to be the primary focus, but I want a fly fisherman in the painting and I'd like the angler to at least resemble me enough that a visitor in my home would likely say, "that's you, isn't it?".
I've looked at a lot of artists and have been thinking about this for some time. Presently Robert S. Murray is the artist that I'm most likely to use, but does anyone else have this sort of original or commissioned art in their home? Can anyone make recommendations for other artists who should be considered? I realize that original art usually isn't cheap, but at this point in time, I simply can't afford 6 or 8 grand for a commissioned piece of art and I'm leaning towards something in the 12X24" or 16X20" range and would like to keep the cost at or under $3000 I think.
Eventually, I WILL purchase a larger Brett J. Smith painting, but I can't really afford one now (at least not the larger pieces).
