Cicada question

That's how hatches affect some guys. There are people who "chase the drake" following the green drake hatch up Penns and then going north to streams upstate where they hatch a bit later. It's the lure of catching big fish on big dries.

In other words, "It's a dry fly thing, you wouldn't understand."

You wouldn't understand ...Sorry but that was a rude response! Because I don't fish dries doesn't mean I don't understand matching the hatch!

Matching the hatch doesn't mean crossing state lines for one bug.

I may be a nymph fisherman.. women.. Not a stupid one!

I still heard a few cicadas buzzing today in my area. And caught some trout on the imitations today too. But the hatch is very nearly done now. I missed most of Cicadamania because I was out of the area. But I caught the tail end of it and it was great.

Regarding why people fish the Cicada emergence:

Big trout attacking your fly like sharks. That's about it.

Not to hijack this thread, but will you guys that fish 6 and 7x most of the time, go back to it after having no problem catching wild fish (a lot of them and big ones) on cicada flies in low clear conditions on 2x and 3x? IMO, the fish are not spooked by the tippet diameter, they can see both 6x and 2x, but the heavier tippet is stiffer and tends to put drag on smaller flies. 4x or 5x for normal sized flies is adequate, and 6x for only the tiniest flies.

I have never seen so many big trout rise in the middle of the day with sun out clear water 90 degree days then when this cicada came off did not matter they would kill it on the top i mean i had 8 flies that were destroyed ripped apart. In the midst of when they were really coming off i was ctahcing 7-8 trout in one hole cast after cast on top. Nothing can beat what that was like maybe in 17 years!!!

I was using the dark Maxima, .009, 6 lb test. Not sure was x that corresponds to. But I don't think I'll be using that for tricos. 🙂
